Hi Guys,

I'm looking for your suggestions on a road riding route in and around Jo'burg.

The criteria is:

  • Distance 120Km to 160Km
  • Few traffic lights and busy intersections.  (looking for continuity)
  • Wide roads with little traffic (I'm allergic to cars)
  • Few potholes (preferably none but this is SA)
  • Some hills (less than 2000m elevation)
  • Preferably towards the South or East, but Cradle area would suffice.
  • Safe spot to leave my car if I have to drive to the outskirts of town.

Usually I ride at Suikerbosrand, but apparently that is closed and its killer hills are not what I'm looking for.

Basically something to match the Ironman PE bike course.

From CT so I can't assist with a route, but something I do that might help.

I have a shorter section that works well after dark - I just ride it twice or even three times.

If you reduce your distance you might find there are many more options you would not have considered otherwise.

You can use the roads going around Suikerbosrand... if you coming south park at the circus and ride from there.

I ride from Henley-on-klip into alberton, up through mulbarton, back through wakerville and past samancor and home and that comes in at 120km, can easily add some more roads to take it out further.

PM if want more details or come through and join one weekend.

Cradle. I don't ride the riverside to kloofsicht stretch cause there's no shoulder. I also don't ride beyers, so that leaves repeats of the caves to Malibongwe.

Depends on where you ride from... You can park in Cradle do a loop or 2 around there. Alternatively stop at Key West shopping centre, Randfontein, out past Brandvlei to Magaliesburg past Maropeng & then do the Cradle. Problem is you finish that 120+ ride coming up Krugersdorp hill!! Real leg killer that

PM me if want some more details.

Anyone know anything about the current status of SuikerbosRand? Riding allowed? Price?

Sucks... rode past the karekloof entrance on sat and thought of stopping to find out anything but decided to just keep going. Hopefully it will open again soon but I highly doubt it
