heres my experience about asking about trail bikes here, you can have bike you want so long as its a giant trance, and your right to freedom of speech may be exercised but only if you are talking about how great a giant trance is.

Aaaahh! but the way the question was worded was COMPLETELY different.!!!

AND

His limit R40

Now we change the tune to

PYGA  --  PYGA  -- PYGA

To the tune of Heidi - you know the one in the mountains.

(Just to re-iterate NOTHING beats Trance in it's class)

I'm pretty sure there is a cycle shop in PE that would change the crankset to single speed for free if you bought a Trance from them (they have a demo bike in store to test). I would then find a deal on a Rockshox PIKE to complete the bike. If there are any hassles with your Trance, then you know there is local support! If you can get a trail ready PYGA for under 40K, then that would definetly be a good option too.

Thanks for all the advice thus far.

With regards to the Specialized's offerings, the Stumpjumper is what I would look at. The Enduro would be overkill for the trails here I think and the Camber would be a bit more to the xc side to what I'm looking for, the camber evo may be an option though.

The Trance is an option. I've had a look at the Trance 2 and it is great value for money but the 75mm stem and 730mm wide bars will have to be changed as it just doesn't suit the geo or purpose of the bike and what I keep reading from reviews is that the 140mm 32 flexes and the shock tune isn't the greatest.

I'll definitely keep a watch on the classifieds for a good used PYGA. I stand to be corrected but I think the Banshee frames are even more expensive than the PYGA frames and I feel that skimping on parts on one of those frames will take away from the frames potential a bit.

Obviously the only real way to decide is to go ride the various options. Thanks once again for all the input, much appreciated.

Come now don't be difficult. Sub 30k there is bugger all else. 40k opens a lot more options as can be seen in this thread. You are the only one to mention Trance in every post. This thread isn't about you and don't hijack it.

Back to topic and trolls aside. This would be my choice:

I rode the AM4 over the weekend and WOW!

R37.5k for that spec? Does it come with citizenship to the principality?

Plus I've heard that it takes quite a while to actually find The Principality of Andorra, so if someone is actually a big enough knob to pick that over a Spez Enduro29, Giant Reign, Stumpy Comp Carbon, Pyga Pascoe, Camber Evo, Silverback Slider, Rocky Mountain Altitude, Trek Fuel, etc... They'll probably wait upwards of a month for their bike.

Hahaha, absolutely agree. You listed some absolutely killer bikes. That Makro/Game stores looking bike above really wont make my list. Sorry.

Hmmm.

I have a new 27.5 Reign, Previous bike was a 26" Stumpy. I ridden the 29er Enduro, 26" Enduro, 650b Trance, 29er Stumpy etc and I was blown away this last weekend by the new Meta. It is really good and reviews agree.

That said, my experience is on the Meta AM and not on the Trail but they are the same platform so I doubt it is very different.

I will agree that the price is too much. It was R35k up until last week and even that it too much. The bike does have a lot going for it. The frame is superb, light, 1x10 with extender out of the box (don't be fooled by thinking the bike shop will do a 1x10 coversion for free, they wont its a R2k upgrade that I have just done on my Reign) and the fork is better than the Fox 32 rubbish. What on the bike do you not like? The only thing I would change immediately is put on a dropper.

Calling it a Makro/Game lookalike that should be sub 20k is absurd. The frame alone is R15k. I think you should check out the prices of bikes again. At least it is not a "Trance" (for Mada..). Buying none mainstream obviously does cost a bit more.

From all the reviews I've read and how the new Meta has been received abroad, I've only really heard good things about it. Diald bikes is charging crazy high prices for them though, for the same price you can order the next spec level up, the Essential, directly from Commencal or alternatively, the Meta AM Essential off Chain Reaction Cycles for R1200 more.

Yup it is a lot as I said I agree. I mean my Reign with Pike, Monarch Debonair, XT everything, Hope Narrow wide and extender cost me similar to that price. I'm afraid there is a bit of a premium on exotics.

Regarding your CRC calcs remember that shipping is R2k plus and the tax is insane as well. Several thousand rands which is why these bikes cost a lot here.

If you want something more mainstream. Nothing beats a Trance ;)

The frame is only 15k coz it has "Commencal" on it. They don't have a superior suspension design that many buyers are willing to pay a premium for. I've seen a Silverback specd with a Reba fork, full slx and Arch Ex wheels for 18k brand new. There's a difference between knowing the prices of bikes and knowing what bikes are worth.

vs 20k for a Transition, 27 - 30k for an intense and 12-16k for a Giant frame, not to mention 20k for a Pyga...

Yes, silverback offer an immense value proposition (as does Giant) but that doesn't mean that the frame is 15k just because "it has commencal on it" - even though it comes without a shock, so the frame cost is more like 20k when you've specced a monarch RT3 or something

Commencal is a VERY good bike manufacturer, with oodles of history. They have a very good suspension design, and whilst the design itself isn't mind blowing, they could very easily have built a completely shaite bicicletta by moving the pivot points a few mm either way or cocking up a measurement or 2.

You obviously don't like Commencal and that is fine, I don't need to convince you on the brand.

Bringing a hard tail silverback into it doesn't justify anything.Essentially those components are all you are really paying for...
