Is a 2x10 any good for girls?

OP, go 2x10. Its all you should ever need.

Tripple cranks are what remains of the old 8 and 9 speed cassette days.

When 10 speed came out. A few bikes sported 3 x 10. (Still do)

But I think it was because there were still so many tripple cranks around or maybe it was just old habits. 3 x 10 is pretty much useless and overkill on most bikes.

2 x 10 is the general standard today which are phasing out the old 3 x 9 setups.

This is rubbish.

There are still plenty of trials where you need more gears than a 1x11 or 2x10 can offer

AND

Most of us ride different trials in different circumstances with different people of different strengths. For instance I regularly ride steep hills on a social ride where 7kph is all my mates can do so I need my 24/36 so I can spin at their pace, then we bomb home on the flats at close to 50kph so I need the 42/11. A 38/11 would see me spinning out at 40 and getting dropped.

If all my riding was racing then I could use a 1x11. But it's not so I can't. And neither can 90% of the riders I deal with daily.

If I think 3 x 10. I think marathon bikes. Maybe dales f29 or something. Those are very few and far between. Even marathon bikes these days are leaning towards 2x10 and 1x11 setups. The amount of time the average rider on such a bike will spend pedalling at the top gear is close to none. Rendering it useless. Too many times people end up changing there 3 x10 setups to 1x10 or 2x10 anyways. Even road bikes these days are ditching the big ring in favour of 2x11 setups.

This thread got a bit hijacked with the conversion issue. Going back to OP's query:

I know several women riders who are quite happy with their 2x10 setups on 29ers. I would advise to ask for 11/36 cluster and 24/38 rather than the 26/38 chainrings (or Sram equivalents) as this will make the granny as easy as possible.

It is still likely that you will lose your 2 easiest gears on your 3x10 when you go to a 2x10....but a few rides will fix that. Enjoy

3x10,2x10,1x10 or 1x1 its got nothing to do with gender more about your ability as a rider.

Sure. I asked because the women's specific version of the bike I want to buy comes with a 3x10. Whereas the 'normal' one comes with a 2x10.

Reasonable explanation, thanks! ????
