2nd hand But Safe

So I have seen the benefits of buying 2nd hand definitely a money saver. I have finally got myself my own Bike now. 2nd hand GT Korakaram.

I want to start upgrading components now (dam that bug that bit me).  What is safe to buy 2nd hand and what should I rather buy new.

My research so far suggests the following:

2nd hand:

Front derailer

Brake Set

Maybe Shifters?

Crankset (provided not too much wear on chain rings)

Seatpost (mine is pretty worn and slips down while ridding)

Shocks (air)

New:

Rear Derailer (maybe also 2nd hand if not too much wear on wheels?)

Cassette

Shifters (preferably)

Underpants

Is there anything I can move to the 2nd hand list from the new?

I know that you've just bought the thing, but if you're looking to replace all of that then why not just get a second hand bike that already has all of the nice goodies fitted?

How much are you planning on spending to get all of these parts?  If you're not sure, then work it out and see where you end up.  It may very well be cheaper to just upgrade the whole bike.

Yeah it was a conundrum. I saved for a few months and this bike came past my radar. It fit the profile and i couldn't ride my wifes way too small for me bike anymore. Just too painfull.  My Plan is to buy really good components add it to this bike then buy a full sus frame later and transfer what I can.

Don't

ride it as it is fix only what you have to

you will be fitter and stronger in no time if you do then you will want an even better bike

then dump this one for what you can get and buy a better bike

penny wise and pound foolish ...

upgrading old bikes (unless they are classics) is putting money in a bucket with a hole in and at the end you only have a leaking bucket

I speak from historical experience ...

Ok cool but then my main post still applies. Whats cool to fix with new and whats cool to fix with 2nd hand.

This is coming from a little experience though cause I have ridden enough to know what needs to be replaced for better performance now and what can wait till new bike.

Who wears underpants?

And saw a fat lady who brought out underwear at Edgars from the change room.  Guess the next person will get a wet feeling...
