Specialized Camber 29 vs Camber Comp 29

Hi guys. I'm a new novice rider. I've been using some of my friends bikes and I'm ready to buy one. The bikes I looked at locally was the Specialized Camber 29 vs the Giant Trance 2. R23000 vs R25000. I decided on the Camber 29. Reviews last year mentioned negatives as the spring front fork which has been upgraded to a Rockshox air fork in 2015. The tires are tubeless, the brakes tekro and it has 2/9 gearing. I'm test riding the chamber next week to see how it feels.

Is this bike good enough for a newbie to ride at least once a week for at least two years? Should I rather buy the camber comp 29 and is it worth R7000 more?

Other bikes for around R23000 to R25000?

Thanks for any help.

The bike is more than good enough for your intended use. Btw its a Camber.

Enjoy

I bought the camber 29 two years ago. That was after I went over the handlebar of a "Hybrid" doing 45km/h on a short sharp decent and the handlebar broke off  the stem. That incident left me with two broken arms and a brake lever pegged in my leg. I was looking for a strong bike that wouldn't cost too much. Camber 29 it was, it's a great bike, I have just done the upgrades (after two very satisfied years)  XT groupset, Fox air shock, Mavic crossmax ST rims. I kept the frame because it is so strong it really instills confidence. And lastly the bike not only rides well, it looks damn good as well.

Thanks guys. I'm sure the bike is strong enough. I weigh a 100kg and I'm trying to find out if the upgraded fork and shock of the comp (with the Shimano gear) is the way to go and worth it.

I bought a 2014 Camber 29 and it is an awesome bike. It has so many great qualities - descends like crazy and has excellent climbing traction. My only upgrade thus far has been replacing the shitty Suntour fork with an RS SID.

Specialized have really sorted the 2015 model's spec, by ditching the Suntour for an air-sprung RS and giving the bike a 2X drivetrain. The components are basic, but durable and deliver good performance.

The bike has a hell of a lot to offer a rider.

Thanks the_odinson. I saw the 2015 fork has been upgraded to Rockshox and that one of the biggest complaints of 2014 was the Suntour spring fork. I was completely sold on the entry level and then I went riding with some friends in Karkloof. I've been listening to my friends who all talk about their next upgrade Iof this or that. I would like to avoid upgrades unless it's required for broken equipment.

How has the other components treated you this last year? Are you considering upgrading anything else? Retrospectively, should you have gone comp or are you happy as a pig in a blanket with your original choice?

Really happy. Just remember, the compulsive need to upgrade is a symptom of cycling. Even if you ride the best groupset, something better will come along and you'll want that.

However, I'm 100% satisfied with the current components. I considered buying a 2X10 groupset, but can't justify the price, as there will be a marginal increase in performance. I'm sticking to my 9-speed for now. That Deore RD on the Camber is a beaut. Mechanically simple, but it shifts like a dream if adjusted correctly and it's tough as nails.

If you can easily afford the Comp, then go for it. Keep in mind that you still need to buy a nice lid, bibs and a whole host of other accessories that cost a small fortune.

Good point about the extras.
