the mechanism in the XT and XTR shifters is the exact same. XTR uses a stronger return spring for a crisper feel. and the housing is different. You could lso modify the XT shifter by fitting the XTR back plate but you will need a shifter someone is throwing awa because they won't sell you that part i bet.

I suspect you are correct about the shifter part.. It is still a risk if you consider the price of a new XT shifter.. I think some more research will be advantages to the outcome. It is a similar story with the SLX >> XT >> XTR brakes, but that is a debate for another forum.

Seanscalpel here on the hub has done it. Maybe check if him how easy it was to do / what the risks are. From what I recall he said it was simple and works perfectly.

The only XTR part that is made from separate moulds and process are the cranks. The calipers, brake master cyclinder, shiter mechanisms are all common parts with little details like springs and detents that changes the tactile response for the user. With XTR you buy a lot of titanium.

XTR also has ball bearings in the shiter where XT has a bush that fits in the same space. So for example XTR may have to support bearings for the lever shaft where XT will have a bearing on the end with higheset load  and a bush on the other, while SX will have two bushes

XTR also undergoes more post machining to reduce weight and create different aesthetics across the product line

Thanks. I will check in with him.

Keen to hear as well......would like to try it.....makes a 1x10 nice and affordable and could be the sweeter option.

I have XTR on race bikes....XT on training bikes....wouldn't mind same feeling across all at more reasonable price.

Just that......all shifting patterns the same on shifters.....changing from bike to bike, gets annoying some times, the differences that is.

ah ok, was confusing because an XTR feels much better than an XT since it runs on bearings and not bushes like the XT. Also has much firmer springs on the ratchet and follower springs so everything just feels firmer and more crisp.

a bit like the difference between a Seiko and a Citizen

So it will only feel like XTR in that you have the multi release

I think that video is talking about the m770 xt. The new m780 has multi release as well if I remember correctly. (may be wrong - will check my bike when I get home)
