Commuter bike for gardener

Ok so gardener is keen to commute as taxi fares eat Into income and he sees me and family cycle.

 

Do I get him mtb or road ? , suppose I would need to ride his route 1st

 

But as I will end up taking on maintenance responsibility I feel decent durable rigid mtb would be way to go

 

Any suggestions or some one with one willing to swop for cash !
