All I see in these pictures are glorified skate shoes. Why not get a pair of lace up cycling shoes and leave the cleats off?

Shimano, comes in black if blue is not your thang.

Because they're terrible on flat pedals ...

Even when clipped in the flat sole helps grip on clipless pedals with a wider base that most riders in this demographic (the more gravity orientated) will prefer

So how many of those very hard rubber studs are going to make contact with the pins?

That's like saying the following about rock climbing shoes...

All I see in these pictures are glorified stokies. Why not get a pair of hiking boots?

Hi-Tech, comes in 50 shads of brown.

Or why do rugby players need different boots from soccer players. They both run around on grass and kick a ball of sorts.

The answer to your question about these "glorified skate shoes" is simple. GRIP!

They are specifically designed for cycling. From the shape of the upper, to the stiffness of the sole (way stiffer than a skate shoe), and ultimately down to what makes FiveTen special... the rubber compound used on the sole. This allows for maximum grip on flat pedals with pins.

But hey, don't take my word for it... rather just use above mentioned Shimano shoes (with cleats removed) on long pinned flat pedals, while riding rock gardens, hitting jumps, and bunny hopping obstacles.

Please be sure to send pics of shins after.

Not impressed with the quality of 5.10's at the moment.

My Impacts are wearing like a stick of butter on a belt sander!

A mate also has a pair of Impacts and his have lost a chunk of the tread!

I have done two mild trail rides on my pair of new impact lows and I am a little disgusted with the quality as well. After all the hype and the price of these shoes, I expected them to be better.

There are already two spots on the toe area where the rubber has come loose from the rest of the shoe and the soles have a few nicks in them from the saint pedals. Unfortunately I bought them privately from someone who imported them and whom they did not fit, so no warranty.

They work exceptionally well, but looks like there were some quality issues in the batch I bought.

I think it's more to do with the mi6 rubber, I think it's too soft unless your shoes are sponsored.

Noted, but I've read a number of long term reviews and all of them mentioned durability as a strong point. Nothing should be peeling off after two rides, regardless of what rubber compound is used. They are made to be used on flat pedals with pins, so bits of rubber torn from the sole after two rides is also not on.

5.10s with flat pedals: best decision I have made. The stealth sole sticks like glue to the v12 pedals (with pins) in wet, very wet and dry conditions. Shoes also very comfortable.

Try them you may be pleasantly surprised

I was pleasantly surprised with the performance, it is the durability that I am disgusted with.

Had mine for about 6 or 7 months. Use them 3 times a week and no signs of unreasonable wear... and I generally destroy shoes.

That's the old rubber. I'm back on that as well. The new compound is just way too soft. I gouged a chunk out of the shoes soon after purchase
