Are all bikes made equally good and sometimes better?

Are there any notoriously bad mountain bikes which should just be avoided?

I’m not talking about the Makro specials. I’m not talking about components which can be upgraded.

I’m talking about frames built by any of the usual brands we consider “proper”. Hard tail or full suspension.

Every time you read a review or a classified ad for a bike, or someone gives an opinion on their own bike the comments are almost always the same: “rides like a dream” “amazing handling” “trail eating monster” "climbs like a goat" etc.

Are all modern bikes simply great, with some being better than others?

Who's had an experience with a really miserable two wheel contraption?

Photos and personal accounts please.

Mine was with Trek , I broke everyone ( 7 in total ) but what was nice I always had the latest color . Not to say this will happen to you but I wouldn't go down that single track again .

according to this forum anything that isint a giant trance 2 is terrible and should be melted down and turned into a giant trance 2

You are 100% correct   excuse the pun but eSPECIALly a certain brand with an "S" badge.

Like anything, you will always have a few bad apples come off any production line.

Sometimes you really have nothing but amazing experiences with a brand, sometimes every replacement you get from them is a dud.

Never had it with a bike personally, but, I had 3 Samsung phones in a little under a month that all were faulty, so now in my mind every phone they make must suck ;)

personally im not a fan of the trance 2, but you get crucified if you say something like that here

Maybe its because you bring it up at every opportunity when it is entirely off topic?

It's the same old Mac versus Microsoft, Samsung versus iPhone, I say each to their own.. but I do happen to like Trances :whistling:

I rode a Pyga 110 the other day and I liked that too...

How on earth do you break 7??? all the same or different models?

It seems like the riders of said "s" badges get more anti-love than the bikes themselves?

That's kind of different though, manufacturing defect rather than stupid designs?

I realise it was comparing apples with oranges (or is that Apples with Androids ;):P haha) but I'm just saying some of the issues with a 'bad' bike could be a defect, so 999 bikes out of 1000 are 'perfect' or as close as you can get, but I could be buying the 1000th bike with the fault.

The only bike you should be able to "melt down" is a Pyga, otherwise buy carbon!

There are always die-hard fans of certain brands no matter how often they break. I honestly dont know if an unbiased opinion is entirely possible.

Flame suit on....

Scott - I like the bikes but am too worried about "folding" rear triangles to buy their dual sussers.

Giant - I like their bikes and have not had any issues with mine - that said the 29er Anthems like cracking on the thin seatpost - top tube joint

Trek - dunno much about their bikes and dont care to.

Spatialized   - Actually great bikes but I have also seen quite a few cracked frames etc.

PYGA - not heard of any failures yet... +1 Like

and so on and so on....

some people will love a turd because it is their turd... :P

yeah thats true, but its my punishment to the forum for only talking about it when all i wanted to know about was anything else but that bike (which is apparently a smaller category then it sounds :P )

When I was a teen I had a smart Trek 500 Tri Series road frame that cracked at the brazed-on shifter lugs after 8 years of riding.  Replaced the frame with a Le Jeune made from plumbers tubing and that is still being ridden today - about 20 year later.

Bought a Trek Superfly two years ago and it's been bomb proof, while my mates have had their "expensive" frames crack.

So I suppose you always take a small risk buying a product, but I prefer to go with an established brand with a track record for 'no qibble' support from your LBS.
