Edge 500 HRM not accurate

No need to buy a 510, the 500 works fine for a trillion people ... it's not the unit, it's the strap.

Agree on that point. I want the 510 because it's a bit fancier. Touch screen and sync with my phone. It's just a "cooler" device.

500 is serving it's purpose 100% though. No complaints.

Went out for a quick 20km before dark hit. Cleaned the strap, tightened it for better contact, then hit the road. Started at 164bpm. Sigh.

It seemed to get better after a few k's. Averaged around 150bpm.

I wore a T-shirt instead of my cycling shirt with the full front zip.

Think I am just going to take the plunge and get the HRM3. Don't think there is much more that can be done now.

Thanks for the assistance guys.

I used to have the 500. Strap was always the issue when I had irregular HR readings. Eventually I used a Polar Strap with the Garmin Sensor, and it never gave me another days problem. Wife is still using it.

Replacing the battery is a cheap test and it just MAY help?

And as my mate always says 'use it, don't use it' .....

If it is the soft strapy version it may be the strap as mentioned before, however if it is the harder strap, will not hurt to try another battery, could just have been replaced with a slightly lower powered battery, try again, R15 as apposed to another R1000 for a replacement, alternative is to get together with someone and see if it is the unit or the HRM and test it

I took my Edge 500 in for repairs and ended up getting an upgrade to a brand new unit. My old unit had a problem with the barometric sensor and the Heart rate strap was perfect. You may have it for mahala. I work in Woodmead. You just need to collect

Uhm........ this Gentleman said you can have his for free........ why don't you take him up on that offer? If it still doesn't work, get the HRM3 from easygis.co.za or autostyle.co.za and save yourself a few rands.

I don't know how I missed that post. Damn. Thanks for bringing it up.

L'Bie, dropping you a PM now to organise. Thanks for the offer man. Really generous of you!

Also try fitting the battery in reverse, hold it there for a few seconds and fit it the right way round and close it up, then re - pair the strap. This does a master reset of the straps built in parameters, this may help...

Went the same route, soft strap only means that when I run it doesn't chafe the living hell out of me. Still have a scar from 2012 IM.

Have the same issues and agree with most solutions except also unclip the sensor after every workout. Wash the belt often. Make sure that the contacts and body is moist when putting it on.

Love Garmin but the HR strap is a major issue.
