Those bikes at Linden are excellent value; I have bought two for our workers and they have lasted very well even though they are mostly used on corrugated dirt roads..

I regularly upgrade bikes for commuters in my area.  The cheap department store bikes (R1000-R1200) are a no no.  They last approx one year if ridden for 15km per day and then are SCRAP.  I buy 2nd hand bikes for R1000 to 1500 dep on condition and then spend an average of R500 each to get them 100%. The minimum spec I set is 8 speed and a 1 1/8 steerer tube.  I prefer Hybrids as there is no cheap fork to hassle you and there is less demand than for MTBs so are usually better value for money.  These are bikes that would have sold for around R4000 new 6 or so years ago. Service them three + times a year, commute for 30km 5 days a week  and next year they will just be a year older.  Just remember that all the bikes in this range (and the "better" ss types discussed above are cup and cone bearing bikes and HAVE to be serviced often.

Linden cycles always has brand new axis royals for 1500, they are exactly the same as the old humbers from back in the day but still being produced by a factory to this day and all spares are readily available
