Mismatched wheelsets

many companies such as spaz with their roval wheelset and mavic with their crossmax sx wheelset (theres almost certainly more that i dont know about) have a different number of spokes on the front wheel (24) to the back wheel (28)

and the reason for this is because the forces that the front and rear wheels are subjected to are vastly different, you can afford to have a slightly lighter front wheel because it rarely hits things as hard as the rear wheel does, and (dont quote me on this next bit) it might be subjected to less forces during cornering too.

now we are clearly ok with this, which is fine.

last year i built up a new wheelset, hope pro 2 hubs laced to spank spike oozy trail rims... these rims are light (420g 26in) and pretty strong, although ive still managed to damage the rear rim.

which brings me to the point of this topic. looking back i should have gotten 1 oozy trail (pretty much a ztr arch, for those of you who like ztr) and one spank spike enduro (ztr flow)

now this thread isint about you guys talking about how you think i should have gotten different rims and whatnot and me defending myself, i want to know what you think of mismatched wheelsets, and if you saw one for sale would you consider it.

personally i really like the idea, to me its like having the perfect tool for the job.

Nuttin wrong with it.

Nuttin at all. And if you are a stickler for sameness (which I know you're not...) you can just de-sticker the rims and be done with it.

Unless you order one green and one blue rim. Then you're Fkd...

technically, nothing wrong with it. Aesthetically, its a deal breaker for me simply because i dont like (color) mismatched stuff. Its way easier to casually say someone can just go respray or resticker something than to actually do it. While they might profess to saying its not an issue, i'll bet when it comes to deal time, they gonna haggle. Like mad ;)

edit: clarified that i'm biased against color mismatches, not wheel size.

None of the trials riders run the same rims front and back, Trials rims are specifically designed as dedicated front and back rims. Exactly as you said, right tool for the job. So in short, build a wheel that will get the job done, not for resale value.

If a mismatched set was for sale and it suited my intended purpose. I would buy it. It doesn't bother me at all. If they were different colours, maybe it would bother me a little. But not enough to discourage me entirely. Having said that its still a point I would raise with the seller (not that I think I should have to) when negotiating price. Like you said. It will be harder to sell down the line.

My slight OCD would render me immobile.
