I take my giant revel for its first service...lesson learnt....dont take your bike for a service the week of the race...that weekend i enter the karkloof classic 40 km ride...new to this mountain biking thing...wondering if i havent taken on more than i can handle...i dont need bike issues.

Saturday afternoon ( day before the race) we find liquid on my front fork... Back brake leaking...so i take it to the on site mechanics...they dont have spares for tektro brakes...so i have to wait till sunday...the morning of the race to get spares to repair the leak...R120 later thanks to them i get to ride the classic.

The following week i take the bike for a ride but find i need to pump the brake to get it to work...understandable...there was a leak so maybe it just required bleeding.

Take the bike to our local bike shop...pay R125 to bleed the brakes...a week later same problem...so i take it back and find the same problem...oil leaking out were the pipe connects to the lever.

R199 later i end up with brake pads...and told that the bolt just had to be tightened...but were squeaking so they decided to replace the pads.

But heres the thing...i take the insert for the pipe ...at the lever which seals the pipe as you tighten ...to find its actually for a Shimano and not tektro brake....but the best part is the R199 brake pads...not only can i get shimano pads cheaper but the pads indicate...city use...this is after i have spoken to the shop guy about the off road race this weekend.

It seems the bike industry is just as f$&@& up the industry i work in...every mother...brother uncle and sister run a bike shop with staff which are clearly not qualified...rather just time served... learn a bit here and there and you automatically become "bike mechanic" [emoji15]

How does a bike mechanic qualify as a bike mechanic ...bit like a "technician" if you dont make the grade as an electrician then you become a " gate technician"

Surely they can read...as shown in the pic below for the brake pads supplied...for city use.

If they put a part that looks like this into the brake cable and your brakes are tektro ...slap the idiot because this part is for shimano not tektro...you gona have problems with leaking mineral oil and pressure loss...the tektro part is a brass colour with a rubber seal

You should open a bike shop.

Pass on the bike shop...I have a 4 car garage fully kitted out for woodworking...thinking of selling all the machines and turning it into a man cave come bike repair centre just for my bikes tiled floor...air con ...massive screen linked to the Internet for how to videos...wicked sound system...could have a space for a road bike...2 mtbs my favorite hybrid and a spot in the corner for a 2015 yammy R1...and a small pub

If you back brake was leaking how on earth did the fluid get on the "front fork" (there is only one fork on your bike by the way).

Leaking from the hose neXT to the lever would be my guess.

TGF...been a good learning curve...glad i havent gone out and bought a new " decent" bike yet....seems there is a lot more to just going out and buying a new bike.

Firstly you need to know if you gona enjoy it...

would be a waste having a 100 k bicycle hanging in the garage that not being used...or trying to sell it.

Then there are different models.

Hard tail...soft tail

Group sets.

Which seat to buy...that has a thread of on its own.

Ally or carbon

And so the list goes on and on ...

Not familiar with all the bicycle terms yet...just starting out.

I couldnt understand why i would want to spend 30 k + on a bicycle...now that i have spent some time off road and done a couple of off road races...i can see why.

Once i know what i want...i will upgrade....for now i will continue to watch as many park tool tech Tuesday tips and learn as much as i can about bicycles...then i can order parts ...repair and upgrade components myself....this bicycle workshop/man cave sounds better by the minute,

Had an oil leak on my back caliper of my brand new bike. Long story short, my LBS "sorted it out" when I took the bike back to them with a dodgy back brake. The second time I took it back was 2 months later with the same problem. They refunded me the R150 brake pads I put on before K2C, replaced the caliper, hose and pads for me with new parts at no cost. They even changed out my rotor with a good second hand one that was in a better condition than my original rotor.
