Stellenbosch looks amazing for biking!!!!!!

I guess i could up rental allowance depending on costs of living (of which I have no idea)

What is a ball park for rental percentage based on salary (i.e. 30% of salary on rent?)?

What would really help is an idea on cost of living,

I guess a good indication is:

A beer in a pub R18 - R25

Cappuccino - R20

Pint of milk (or 1 / 2 litre) - R10/l

Loaf of bread - R12 (sliced)

A main course in an average restaurant - R85 - R120

A glass of wine in restaurant - R20 - R30

Anyone happen to know these?

Thanks MTBeer and Jacques

some stuff is similar, others are massively cheaper, but overall its all cheaper

A bottle of wine here is about R130 for something that is just passable, and R280 for something you'd turn up to a friends with

a 3 bed house here is about 25-35k (Rand) per month, which i guess is on par with stellenbosch prices

As my salary is in USD, It means i'll have more money to spend on bike stuff :)

We burn through about $6000USD a month on a normal month, and we aren't lavish at all ... its beginning to get on my nerves now!

I'm flying to Uk in 3 weeks, when i'm back i'll be sure to fly down, hire a car and check out the areas thanks

With R60k/month's expenses you can live a fairly decent (but also not lavish) lifestyle in Stellenbosch with a wife and 2-3 kids.

Not lavish at all... That is breadline for most Stellenbossers... :-o

If say for example someone had 90-100k a month, would that be passable for an ok lifestyle in the bosch?

Net? Yes, absolutely. That would put you into "entry-level lavish" territory, to be honest.

I'm guessing with a family you're looking at:

Housing (4 bedroom house) - R35k

Vehicles x2  - R15k

Insurance - R2k

Medical aid - R5k

Groceries and household sundries - R10k

Kids education & other stuff (guessing on what I've heard here) - R15k

Entertainment - R10k

Total of R92k, and that's without savings & investment.

It all adds up so quickly!

potentially a loaded question

you didn't mention staff, I take it people don't have cooks, cleaners, nannies, gardeners etc?

Nope, not included.

Add roughly R2k for a cleaning lady twice a week, not sure what the going rate for a gardener is.

Also, bear in mind that R35k/month buys you a house, you can rent for a lot less, likely R20k.

Somerset West, the Wanabees have 50km+ mtb trails on our doorstep, road cycling/ training is also good with the R44 to Stelllenbosch and, if weather permits, Clarence drive.

I can also recommend Vergezicht school for special need kids.

ok thanks

staff costs are a lot more expensive  (i knew there must be something!)

Does that mean its about 5-6k a month for someone full time?

Yup, you'd be looking around that figure.

You're in for a treat wrt bike stuff. I did some basic pricing and a bike spec "2 jumps" lower is around 50 percent more at Galleria mall "compared silverback sola 2 and 4.

Otherwise depends on what you're buying. Some things similar some at 3 times the price. On average Nairobi seems to be around 80 percent more expensive.
