PPA Transparency

King 3 was largely rejected by the NPO sector and as a result of it the NPO sector developed the Independent Code in response to King 3 as a means of 'self regulation'. The Institute of Directors met last week in Cape Town with representatives of the NPO sector of the Western Cape as part of a consultative process to ensure that King 4 'speaks' to the NPO sector as well, so if it all works well, NPOs will adopt it. I don't think PPA broke any rules, constitution rules, codes or legislation. The issue is not about compliance but rather what constitutes 'good governance' and best practice and that is largely left for Civil Society to decide, so the better your practice, the better you will do in the long term.

PS. King codes are not legislation but  various stakeholders will judge you in relation to it, so it would be good business practice to subscribe to codes that will enhance their status as an entity you would want to transact with

I too received this same letter in my post box by hand last week Friday - from who I do not know. I have done a whole lot of research over the past 6 days trying to understand what has happened to PPA and here my comments.

PPA good corporate governance?

They have just appointed a member of the EXCO to be the CEO with out him resinging from the EXCO before applying for the job!!! To top it all it was a secret ballot off the remaining committee member off which about 6 are part of his MTB club, who voted on the final 3 candidates without even seeing the CV of these candidates! I don’t even know if this new CEO qualified to get past round one of the interviews i.e. 3 years of tertiary education was in the ad for the job! Two PPA - EXCO member I have spoken too could not confirm this for me.

PPA has hit rock bottom on corporate governance!! Since speaking to some PPA committee members who are in in “shock” as to how PPA has been “taken over” by a club!

I am not saying the new CEO is or is not the correct man for the job - I don’t even know him and did not know his name until after receiving the letter in the post - but it seems corporate governance was not high on the agenda on appointing the new CEO.

If the vote was by secret ballot can you be 100% sure that everyone from his club voted for him?

Appreciate your efforts at keeping the discussion around corporate governance and not an attack on Rob.

Clearly though there are issues pertaining to the electoral process and these need to be resolved to prevent this kind of discussion in the future. That said is any of the exco members you spoke too willing to publicly acknowledge that they feel this way regarding the electoral process? Their answer on that would shed a clearer light on what's happening and whether this is in fact a case of sour grapes because somebody didn't get "their preferred candidate" elected.

I have no comment on the accusations of nepotism, the electoral process, the commitee members and/or calling his qualifications into question. I don't know anything about the inner circles of the PPA, TMB or quite frankly much about the inner workings of any other cycling related organisation. I'm just an average cyclist with a parks activity card and a ppa membership. I don't know Rob at all. But I remember his name.

He revamped the single track at Rhodes last year. There is no need for me to elaborate on this achievement. His name stuck in my head not because of the track but because shortly after that...

He was the one who attended the sentencing of the two idiots that got caught on the Gopro robbery in Somerset West. It was on facebook. These are 2 completely unrelated events but its the only reason I remember him at all and it was reason enough to have my brain tick him off as an oke who genuinely cares about the greater cycling community and not just his chommies and table mountain.

Whether the recruitment process was flawed, the CEO a buddy of the exco or whatever gripe is had. Why can't we as cyclist positively affect our smaller cycling communities, which can have a positive effect on the larger cycling community

If the truth has been told. Great, if not then it will be revealed when it is.

All this so called debate stems from how the individual can benefit from organisation such as CSA or PPA. Before either of these, the bicycle was in effect.

Leave the politicking to the politicians and go ride your bike
