I have 2 old Topeak Moonshine riding lights and would like to convert them to LED. I want better run times and brighter light (800 lumens will be good). Has anyone tried this? DIY hacks? Electronic engineers?

You will need a driver board, the LED with proper heatsink, the correct reflector for LED. Will be cheaper to buy one. I miss the DIY projects before the LED lights became so cheap.

I already went down that road. Ended up just buying a light from china. Worked out cheaper and more reliable in the end. PS: I also wasn't able to get anything as bright as you wanting to do, also part of the reason I gave up.

Judging by the pricing of lights in the classifieds lately, I wouldn't bother. My 900lm Magicshine battery is toast and it's probably cheaper to buy a complete light than a new battery...

The bonus about doing it yourself is that you can pick your beam pattern. I've got a whole box of optics to play with - the Chinese ones are often very spotty so they look brighter in shop tests, but leave much to be desired out on the trail.
