I need advice please. I'm looking for a decent secondhand bike between 12 and 20k. I can buy a second hand 2013 Scott Spark 940. City Cycles has a 2015 Spark 960 on special for R16700. My question is, rather the new 960 or secondhand 940. If Im' not mistaken I think the 940 is better specced. I haven't viewed the 940 as yet but according to the owner its in pristine condition

Do not buy a second hand Scott Spark. They have a reputation for breaking at the chainstay. There are plenty of threads on this on the Hub.

If you buy new, you will at least get a warranty.

Ja the cracking happens because the bearing is not serviced enough/timeously and then it puts strain the weld. Just make sure you check and service it regularly, it is not rocket science to do it yourself.

Ok I see. The bike is in mint condition tho but im not an expert and dunno where exactly to look. Will I be able to spot the crack if there's one? I've checked the rear triangle but could'nt see any cracks or any scratch marks

Just because it hasn't cracked yet, it doesn't mean it won't crack in the future. It seems as if you really want the bike, why not contact a Scott agent and find out what a replacement part will cost. That way you can factor this in with your negotiations and future costs.

Lots of people mention this and I'm sure it's a true, but why don't other brands break with the same frequency? Surely the average cyclist on a Spark will do the same amount of bearing maintenance as the average cyclist on another brand.

its always the ones with shot bearings that crack... also may be the manufacturing year, because after the swingarm is replaced it doesnt crack. Well on the bikes I have done at least.

I had a 940 - XT/SLX specced. 960 is specced much lower. Superb ride, never a day's problems, and really took all the hammering I put it through. I'd go for the 940 - then enjoy the bike from day 1
