I'm currently recovering from a discetomy, also L5S1. Had the op 3 weeks ago, how soon after did you resume exercise. I've been told 6 weeks, then the plan is start strengthening the core and maybe some pilates. When did you eventually get onto a bicycle? This recovery is really driving me crazy. Not at all used doing nothing like this!

Yes 6 weeks is correct. Only started cycling last year so roughly 4 years after the ops. ( Never had any interest in cycling till last year). I am also very conscious of body position when bending and picking things up.

This thing is catchy, I also had L5-S1 discectomy op done last week. Went through 2 months of progressively worsening sciatic pain before that. Pain gone but left with some numbness and slight weakness in left calf and foot. Cycling is out the window for a while.

Maybe we should form a discectomy counselling/ therapy group!

lol - maybe we should. My pain is largely gone, just suffer with some numbness in the buttock and hamstring occasionally. Left calf is also very stiff, with slight loss off power if I compare it to my right (tried doing a calf raise on the left leg).

You guys do realize that the originator of Chiropractic therapy claims to have received instructions from another realm on which he based his treatments...that kind of rules it out for me although my sister is hooked.

Whats wrong with physio or good old fashioned stretching and a bit of bike tinkering?

PS: I have suffered lower back pain, sometimes extreme in nature but the last time was several years ago. Some bike tweaking and lower back exercises seem to have cured it.

That said, if it works for you who am I to talk :-)

The strange thing for me is that i have no back pain when riding, nothing what so ever but have it at odd times, if i sit at the table too long, or staf for a long time ir move in a weird way...etc.
