also doing it for the first time. and they tell me it is a lllloooootttt of fun.

i just can't wait.

got a few tips here and there already....

get some "ice man" (dischem) to rub your legs after the day's ride.

drink a recovery drink - some thing like ignite from engery dynamics.

get rehidrite to put back all the electrolytes - otherwise you'll struggle with some cramps.

go straight to bed after you had a nice shower. wake up dinner time, go have something to eat and then go back to bed, or something like that.

have your bike serviced before you do your last training ride.

have a 27/12 fitted to help with all those climbes.

amateure and i are planning to take it very easy. the aim is the finish before the 8hour cut off. Big%20smile

Good tips, thanks. I'm also looking forward to this  - I've heard that this is a great tour event

I think I'll use prerace spray and a lot of shammy cream from MarkII

Will be using a Carbo loader drink after each stage - I prefer Muscle Science Carbup - very neutral taste

I allready use Energy dynamics Octane in my bottles

The rehidrate idea is a great one - gonna do that

Will service before the my last training ride to

I'm riding a 11/23 cluster with a 50/36 compact crank - will have to survive

Need to decide if I should use my Campy Eurus (25mm profile) wheels or Zipp404's (60mm profile) - but I think I'll use the campy cause I think wind could be an issue  - Have any hubbers have experiance with differant wheels on those big Mpumalanga climbs !!!

did the first Panorama. my partner hit a pothole 10kms into stage one. it took out one of the other teams and blew both his wheels. we patched him up and after loosing 40mins on the bunch (four punctures, broken shifter cable) finished way back.

I crashed on stage two but we TT'd back into the pack. Won stage three and finished fourth overall.

Important lessons - carry plenty of spares. Ride the biggest gear you can (the tandems clocked 110kph down the passes) I made a special cluster running 25/11 and still ran out of gears at both ends. Never, never, never give up!!!

It's a great event - enjoy!

Markie, few questions:

  1. Are you RACING the tour (competing or just riding?)
  2. What is your team goal?

OK, here's what I experienced last year (as a just riding participant)

  1. Eat on the bike!  Don't just do energy bars, take something like a sarmie with!
  2. Drink Rehidrate after the stage (as previously mentioned)

  3. I had 3 different shammy types (Nalini, Vermarc x 2 and Anatomic Gold).  It helped.
  4. Shammy cream is NB.  I also used Blue Steel anti-chaffing cream.
  5. Loose the Zipps, or maybe keep them for the TT.  On the stages you might just loose them as there are a LOT of crap on the road.
  6. I would go as far as a 11/25 with your compact, but that depends on yourself.  I just find that spinning up the hills on day 3 helps!
  7. ENJOY the race, dis MOERSE fun!

Thanks "ewep",  our goal is to enjoy our first tour but my partner is really competitive Mtb'er so I see trouble on the horizon and we will probably end up racing, (vets catagory) - Good tip re the wheels and bib's
