Push vs. carry: As soon as the terrain gets challenging or steep carrying is much faster than pushing. When pushing you have to lift the nose of the bike over obstacles and have space for you and the bike wherever you are walking. This can be tiring, time consuming and frustrating.

I generally keep the bike heavy but on the big hike-a-bike days I'll move heavy stuff onto my back. This is optimizing for the number of times you have to pick up and put down. I would probably only do this for Lehana's and Stettyn's.

I recommend practicing hike-a-bike, both pushing and carrying, before the race. This will both give your calves a workout and help you figure out what works for you regarding carrying.

On the aspect of packing and spreading the load...what is the take on 'must have' spares? As we all know, to try and provide for every conceivable mechanical would result in a fair weight on its own!

One set of new pads should take you all the way to Rhodes . I only changed brake pads last year at Toekomst but went through a lot of snow and mud before I got there . You normally don't brake a lot anyway  :w00t:

Brake pads, necessary if I have put new ones in this weekend?

Just doing R2R as well, not the proper one.

some may differ, that R2R is not "proper"

Haha, very much a tongue in cheek comment.

With this being my first one, right now I'm well aware how proper this is going to be.

OH! Its going to be proper alright!! Pretty proper! LOL!  :whistling:

I'm carrying a few spare spokes in my handle bar, but i have a bad habit of breaking them. Tyre - no.

Chain - have a few spare links from shortening the chain when new and a few speed links.

the sun was shining, the wind was still, the grass was short

the hills were monsters, the rocks are large, the valleys were deep, the fences were high and the grasslands were brutal.

its was a great day out, true freedom trail riding.
