With all due respect, there was this guy in 2009 who was doing his first FC and came second.

Then he came back the next year and came second again. (beaten by a first timer!)

Then he came back and made the top 5 (repeat these two sentences a few times)

Now he's on the hub tjooing us that okes can't do well on their first race, when in actual fact his best position is still in his first race.

he he.

and another 2nd in 2014, okay point taken it's possible, but 1st place still eludes him while.....

Bank on extra sleep as well, or get use to sleep deprivation, always magic to follow the dotted lines......

Anyone been through Stettyn's this past few months? Any idea how thick/overgrown bush is this year for RASA.

Same goes for Grootrivier into Cumbria.

Pic and reports I have heard of Stettyns indicate that it is not much worse than usual.

By that stage you should be in full barbarian mode anyway - taking pretty much anything as it comes.

No news on Osseberg/ Grootrivier, don't think it has any fire of late and if it lines up with the rest of Sanparks policy ie that they just abandon any old road/ access unless it has a strategic (read economic) value. The significance of this particular section now means that quite a few riders line up an overnight at Hadley with a view to tackling the route with the most daytime possible.

I've been told that they are now both manicured and mown, not sure how up to date that is though?

Yes and Sanparks provide an armed escort to keep those pesky inquisitive buffalos away.

Thanks for input.

So if possible try to do Toekomst/Bucklands to Hadley in a Day.

Any idea on time/km from Toekomst to Bucklands and then to Hadley.

Any idea on time/km from Toekomst to Bucklands and then to Hadley.

From the narratives:

Toekomst to Kleinpoort 90km

Kleinpoort to Bucklands 30km

Bucklands to Hadley 42km

Could be 19+ hrs

I get nightmares about that section before Cambria !!!! It is a scary place at night and that's without Buffalo harassing you .

Without a doubt it has developed into and has the potential to be one of the toughest parts of the route, but I would add that one of the most beautiful, isolated and unique parts of the whole trail.

Entering via Grootrivierpoort with the Cockscombe mountains to your left and seeing the sea for the first time in many days as you look toward the Jeffreys Bay coast and then descend via the Osseberg to the river is just sublime. So, yes its daunting, but there are very few people who nowadays get to see what was once considered one of the best and most challenging 4x4 trails in the country, and you haven't even gotten into the kloof yet. The kloof is what a wilderness area should be and for that I will commend Sanparks, the animals roam free and undisturbed with limited trace of human presence, you are merely a curious visitor passing through.

So maybe a day set aside for that part of the trail is justified - because it is so special. Dont rush it, take pics and enjoy the trail.

Soooooo ....... picked up a late entry for the R2R.

Consider myself as fit, managed the TransDrak fairly comfortably, but after just three (short) rides with a big fat back pack hanging on me my ass is feeling it  Luckily I have the better part of 3 weeks to prepare my most tender parts.

There is unfortunately nothing I can do about my absolute lack of navigational sense in the same time left over!  Pretty sure I hold some record from the last time I tried this in 2010 - took me 51 hours of riding to get to Glen Edward where I called it a day.  Not even Dirt Rider can match that.

Day 1 took 13 hours, day 2 I spent 18 hours riding - never found the turn off from the district road to Ntsikeni, slept in a shebeen/canteen and then spent another 20 hours getting to Glen Edward.  And I loved it! In retrospect though I was in no shape to have even contemplated starting - ego is a wonderful thing

This time I am sticking to the batch like dog sh*t on a blanket

With such a great attitude .. I reckon you'll be just fine!
