Advice on a Shim

Recommended Posts

I have a cannondale f29 alloy that has a 27.2 seatpost fitting, but I have a 31.6 fsa carbon seat post from my current frame I'd like to use. Is it advisable to use a shim? If so, do you know where I could purchase one? Thanks...

From the sounds of it your seatpost has a 31.6 and your frame has a 27.2 diameter. So not sure how you intend to shim it down

But in short no it can't be done if the above is correct.

spoke101 is correct - you can shim a 27.2 seat post into a 31.6 seat tube with a generic purpose built shim which you can purchase at most LBS

but you cant fit a 31.6 into a 27.2 just because mathematics says you cant :w00t:

Depending upon the inner diameter of the 31.6 seat post you may be able to saw the top of a 27.2 seatpost so that the 31.6 fits over the 27.2. You will then have to add a >32mm clamp to fasten the 31.6 to the 27.2 inner post.

Not recommended due to:

- added weight

- looks if not done right

- reduced strength

- may not clamp tight enough and may move around a bit.

Why not buy a fsa carbon 27.2 seatpost?

Mine is basically new and cost me quite a bit. But looks like purchasing a 27.2 will be the only solution.

sell your 31.6 on the hub or place an ad to trade it for a similar 27.2 you never know whats on here till you ask

I have a dale I needed a zero offset post (as the one with the bike was not right for my fit )bought a used one on the hub sold my original on here and bought my new saddle on here also as well as other bits and pieces sometimes

go through the ads see whats there and ask questions etc

post a wanted ad or a to trade/swop ad which often works

you can almost always haggle the prices a bit

seat posts and such come and go all the time on here

and this isn't gumtree or such nonsense this is honest cyclists buying and selling from cyclists if you are unsure about a seller post a query and get some opinions

You can use a mallet to get a 31.6 seat post into a 27.2 frame.

No problem.
