Good day,

I am looking for a second hand BMX for my son. He is 8 years old and said he would like a bike that he can learn to do some trick with.

Got a few on the net.

Mongoose Subject (Don't know if its the correct name for it)

Black Widow (same here with the bike name)

Anything I should be looking for when viewing these bikes?

thanks

Black Widow is a bmx crew from Tampa Florida. Some bmx parts and accessories are made in their honour and labelled as such. Usually flashy stuff. The stickers have become so readily available that riders basically stick it on their bikes anyways. I think there may have been a black widow frame or 2 made in the past. Not sure who the manufacturer was though.

As for the subject. Its a good go to choice and nothing wrong with it at all.

I spoke to 2 youngsters in the square doing BMX tricks a few weeks ago .... although the one guy was sponsored by Mongoose, he said he wished he could use a GT BMX and just swap the decals ... they seem to agree that when it came to doing tricks (these guys were jumping off roofs), the GT frame is the way to go. The non-sponsored rider was using a GT. Don't know which series GT though ...

8 year old needs a junior. But very dependent in rider height and skill. Very difficult, pm me your details and we can have a one on one discussion.

http://evalsbmx.co.za/ is in pretoria, wil be full of advice.  Mr Hankey (schogn lee) at http://bmxdirect.net/  also has huge experience.  BMX's vary a lot - so take up BMXER's advice and have a chat.  Pity the post came this week - most of our top riders were having a blast in joburg, and you would have seen the full range!!

He only got back on his older smaller bike this weekend and I saw that his knees were going past his ears....Sent a PM to BMXER to hear what advice he have.

thanks

Out of curiosity, I haven't ridden a BMX since I was a kid . How does one go about sizing a BMX in adult hood? Are there different sizes etc? The last time I asked the LBS they weren't quite sure either. I ride a 16" sized MTB and would dig to get a BMX to mess around on in the street with my kids

I've also wondered about adult BMX frame sizes, do they make different sized frames to fit taller okes or is that not really necessary considering the riding you do?

Ive picked up a Mongoose Pro yesterday afternoon. All the original parts still on the bike. its been standing for about three years gathering dust and rust. So the rust is only on the nuts and bolts. that will take some elbow grease and vinegar to clean.

I do suspect that the seat was replaced at some point.

thanks

Mostly street and flatland. Is it possible to have the best of all three??
