I have been a roadie for 3 years and would now like to dabble on the dark and dirty side.

 

1. With regards to buying a MTB, how do you decide:

 

- Hardtail

- Full suspension?

 

2. Then what is the difference on all the types of shocks?

 

3. Next question is:

- Shimano

- SRAM

 

4. Final question:

- what spec of groupset (based on previous question)

 

I was hoping to come in at around R8k. Can it be done?

2.  Ensure that both back and front has a lockout functionality

4.  Minimum is Deore (almost the same as tiagra/105) cheap, chearful and almost as good as XTR, XT, LX but a lot cheaper.

You can try SRAM as well but not sure on the range

5.  Cost anything from R10000 upwards.

 

alternatively go hard tail which will be available at R8000

 

Brands to consider:  Kona (dificult to get), Mongoose (inexpensive), Orbea (flow), Giant, Trek, Raleigh, Silverback, Elsworth (bank manager time), wheeler?, GT (i drive is great), Maverick, Planet X, wethepeople (more BMX), BMW (surprised?), and lots others

What do you want to do with the bike? That might give a indication as to what bike you need?

 

Do you want to do races and go for the podium - lightweight hardtail

Do you want to do races and do well but have fun and so on - Full suspension, perhaps something like a Giant Anthem.

Do you want to ride the local trials and just have a blast and do small drops and do more technical riding - Full suspension, something like a Giant trance.

Do you want to do freeriding / downhill? - Full suspension - something like a morewood shova LT

Do dirt jumps, north shore, drops, street, skateparks etc. - DJ bike, something like a Giant STP or GT chucker
