Hi everyone.

Name is Mr B and id just like some advice.

I've been riding xc for fitness and a custom mongoose fireball as my dirt jumper which is single speed.

I would like to buy a bike that now caters for a bit more aggressive rock, Jump and speed lines.

Something in between dirt jumper and downhill.

I have a few idea,s but would love some advice and input.

Trek ticket S ( slope style )

Trek session park ( more DH )

Banshee rampant ( slope style )

Giant Glory ( more DH )

Your list of choices are almost at opposite ends of the scale in terms of difference between bikes. The obvious middle ground between them is a trailbike. A lighter, shorter travel trailbike will be well suited for traily slopy stuff. A transition scout comes to mind.

If you talking about bombing proper rockgardens and doing big drops and jumps then more travel makes sense. There are many many options here including the Reign mentioned above.

A downhill bike is never a waste when its your n+1 bike. But it limits your choices to particular rides and spots. Whereas any modern long travel trail bike should be able to handle most of our DH lines in SA.

It all depends on what you're willing to spend.

The Trek Ticket S and Session are not brought in by the local agents, so you will have to look overseas.

  • Frame & Shock on a Ticket S is around R20k, before VAT & shipping.
  • Frame and Shock on a Carbon Session is around R65k before VAT and shipping.
  • Cheapest Session (the Session 8) is around R52k for and entry level specced complete bike, before VAT, shipping and duty (approx. 15% applied to complete bikes)

So yeah, the Treks are pricey and hard to get hold of.

As for the Banshee, you would have to speak to the local agents  (A-line) to see if they can bring one in. I know often the manufacturer has a minimum order quantity which doesn't make it worthwhile for the agents to bring in certain models. But yeah, contact them and see what they say.

Giant Glory... easily available, but I would not go this route, especially as you are based in Gauteng. If you already have an endure and play/slopestyle bike, then a DH bike can be a nice addition for the odd occasion and KZN trip. But otherwise they're an overkill and a LOT of effort to pedal around.

So... other options...

Well locally there were a few new slopestyle frame options (Dartmoor Shine and Blackmarket Killswitch from Diald). One can probably still get a Specialized P-Slope locally.

Otherwise look overseas. Plenty of new options available, as well as some bargains on Pinkbike, if the seller is willing to ship.

These are the 2 4X/slopestyle critters I ride.

Morewood 'Zuliza'  Prototype. 100mm rear travel. 120 - 150mm front. 150mm dropper post. Nice and versatile for anything form dirt jumps to trail to enduro.

Morewood Ndiza. 100mm rear travel. 110mm front, but can increase fork (RS Revelation RLTi) to 120, 130, 140 or 150mm by removing spacers. Loads of fun. Sadly it might be for sale in the near future.

popcorn Read the above and youll see what i'm trying to say. A trail bike is a waste of time, im talking about 10m gap jumps and drop offs I already have a xc bike that works for trails

I have a blackmarket killswitch which I bought a size up and ride it exactly as you are suggesting.

A dual suss single speed which is super fun for bombing trails, jumping and especially smashing fell lines and hiking trails and dodgy spots or trick days.

I put a 160-120 TALAS on so when I jump and climb it still has a steepish head angle but when pointed down the trail it is all sorts of fun.

It is a bit of a pig to get to the top of some trails, but it just makes me stronger for when I hop on the race bike.

Works for me, not everybody's cup of tea and like most things, there will be detractors. But riding is about smiles and fun, not who is doing it right in their opinion....

Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you as well as I did

Dude that gave me a lot of ideas and things to look at. Thanks alot.

PS you should come ride our Dirt jump trails in centurion some tome.

Sounds good. Where are your dirt jump trails?

Sometimes we head out to Wolwespruit, but it has been ages since I have taken one of the small bikes on some decent jumps.

Another bike that would be worth a little hunt for is a Nukepoof Rook.

I don't think they make them anymore, but it was a pretty versatile slopestyle bike. 105mm rear travel. Could be run with 100 - 160mm fork. And even has a mount for the shifter on the down tube for tail-whips and bar-spins.

But yeah, very nice option.

Whenever I see awesome examples of Morewoods, like the 2 you have, I get saddened that they have gone so quiet.

I saw a post of them selling off some old bits and pieces which really seems like the nail in the coffin.

That Zulisa is amazing, more pics would really be great.
