11 speed crankset on 9 speed system

I have an old 9 speed triple  drive chain setup. I've put it on a new modern frame - I can't afford a new groupset yet. I can't use the small chain ring anymore, I'm not 100% sure but I think the narrow BB prevents it, it looks very close to the frame. The current idea is to buy a new middle chain ring. Basically I only have a 42t and 52t available and it's a bit heavy for me. So buy a 39t chainring as an interim solution for when I can afford a new groupset.

Ideally I'd like to just buy an 11 speed compact crankset - happy days - problem solved.

I believe this is a no can do. My question is why not?

Is it because the chain rings will be too close together to accommodate the 9 speed chain? Is there a way to put spacers between them? Is there some other reason, I've missed?

Im currently running 10 spd chainrings on my 11 spd setup and theres no problems.

Apparently the chains inner gap has a very small difference. The biggest difference comes in with the outside of the chain.

Why not just get a 10speed crank? Im Sure theres a few in the classifieds

Make sure your frame is 11 speed comp.

You can run 10 speed crank with 11 speed chainrings but you chain must match your chainrings and casette to ensure smooth shifting.

Remember that your STI must also match in crank and casette.

Ok but my question is why can't I run an 11 speed crankset on a 9 speed set up and is there any way to Jimmy it?

I understand the issue with sti's, derailleur s and cassette and the chain must match the cassette.

First off your new frame should be alb to accommodate your old Crankset, you might just have to check your BB spacing.

Secondly a 11spd Crankset will work with your 9spd set-up, but you will need to run a 10spd chain which will work on the 11spd Crank and 9spd Cassette.

The teeth measurements of an 11 speed chain ring are different to the gap measurements of a 9 speed chain. You going to drop your chain when riding under pressure as well as cause faster wear both on chain and crank.

The old frame I think used a BB 68 but was a bit wider to accomodate the triple (I think). The new frame is a Focus and the BB is very different! It's a pressfit but that's all I know. Trying to do some research to find out exactly what kind it needs. We tried using an adapter but it didn't work. I don't know how to work out what I need to get for it.

My options are mission to find a BB adapter that will take the triple crankset. Or fork out cash I didn't want to, to buy a new groupset. (A 39t blade is still going to be too heavy for me)

Aaarrrggghhhhh! the bike rides really nicely, I just can't manage with the heavy gears.

Thank you for explaining it. I like to understand how things work and don't work. I think it's got to be a new groupset or an adapter for the BB.

Just in case anyone is interested, it says Pressfit on the lip of the BB but I don't know if it's PF30 or the other kind PF68??? Trying to read the articles from a previous thread about bottom brackets.

I get a bit confused, there is the frame part - which is a tube with a thread... then there is the bracket that fits inside that - they obviously have to match - and then there is the shaft of the cranks - that also has to match... so I'm guessing you buy cranksets to match the bottom bracket.

My old triple obviously doesn't match the frame's, so one would need an adapter that would fit around the shaft, in this case because the old bike is definitely smaller than the new frame - this bottom bracket part. right?

Where would one get one? And how difficult do you think it will be?

Is your old crankset a Shimano Holotech?

The old crankset is Shimano Ultegra 6500 triple (probably should have mentioned that!) Here is a link to the specs: https://www.google.co.za/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=11&ved=0CFAQFjAKahUKEwjU65nN8f3HAhVCXhQKHRNJBbg&url=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.bike-components.de%2Fcache%2Fdl-fc-6500-2-pdf-54bfc21f52dbed8d695ff47120899228.pdf&usg=AFQjCNEGzvWTU4UsMFTNhr03pSqphYvDYQ&sig2=_QX9zvBuFrUvBF-a7rPgvA&bvm=bv.102829193,d.bGg&cad=rja

I can't find much on the new frame but it did come standard with either a FSA Gossamer BB30 or a Rotor 3D CP BB30 crankset. I just bought the frame. If that helps...

Ok. So you have the old 3 piece cranks that use an Octalink BB.

You will need a to remove the Pressfit BB and then press a PF30 to BSA adapter in to the frame. Once this is done you will need to get a new Octalink BB with the right shell width and axle length for the new frame, this can be a bit of a trial and error situation due to your front derailleur throw.

Any reputable LBS that has been around for longer that 10 years should know how to do this.

You may be better off just purchasing a second hand 50/34 compact ultegra crankset.

You can pick one up for around R1000, which won't be much more than replacing the BB

I've just seen your post about the FSA or Rotor as standard. This might throw a spanner in the works as these cranks run longer spindles than standard PF30 cranks. Thus the Focus might be like the Cervelo's and have wider than standard BB shells.

Any chance I'm going to find one before next weekend? Got a back 2 back planned with some mean hills.... ? Starting to panic here!

I did find a Sora 9 speed compact crankset from Evans cycling but with shipping it's R3500 !!! and won't be in time, need to see if I can source one locally. but then I'm back to buying interim parts before I go 11 speed. So frustrating...
