Giant Anthem - frame size and....

Not been on here for a while (years  ) due to being in the DRC (amongst other places).........during which I bought a Giant XTC (Large frame). Great bike BUT I have the seatpost on max and could use another 1/2"- 1" ...............and at 184cm I feel cramped on the bike.

Soooooo..........possibly looking to upgrade to dual sus now, and I've tried 2 XL bikes (Rocky Mountain and Trek) and both feel MUCH better.

Then yesterday had quick test on a 2011 Anthem (for sale in Classifieds) ...........Large frame..........longer neck (130mm if memory serves me) and this felt fine ............seatpost was not fully extended like my XTC either.

Now I'm just confused..........and looking for advice on fit and frame size ???????????

Why is the XTC right on the edge and the Anthem  has room to spare?
Would it make a difference putting a longer neck stem on the XTC?

Also, when did Giant start putting the Maestro system on the Anthem?

neck? do you mean the stem?

Maestro geometry is used on a few bikes from Giant - started 2006 - looks a little different today than what it did back then. As far as I know that is also the year they put it on the Anthem.

Hi there,

I ride the Anthem Advanced 29er Large, and I am 1.84m. It fits me like a glove. I do have a high inseam too. So I am pretty sure it will fit you too.

My stem is the standard 100mm. My seatpost is also not even close to it's max.

You should look at the different brands effective top tube length to compare apples with apples. You cannot compare Large with Large.

Hope it helps. Welcome to PM me if you need more info.

Try a longer seatpost @ 400mm if yours is a 350mm. The added height of the SP will push the saddle back slightly too. Depending on your setup (forward/backward position), a setback seatpost may avoid you having to ride a long stem.

A large frame XTC should be right for your height.

I check quickly, the new XTC and new Anthem 29er's top tube is exactly the same, 61.5cm, so they "shouldn't" feel different.

I see the 2011 XTC 29er was the same BTW.

At 1.84m, and if the ETT of the large Anthem is 615mm, I'd go XL. That ETT measurement is shorter than my Large Reign, and I'm 1.8m tall. I'd also not have anything longer than a 70mm stem on there, otherwise you'll be compromising the handling on technical sections.

Best way to do it is to go for a bike fit, and determine your ideal Top Tube AND stem measurement, then take that total length and adjust for use with a 60/70mm stem, and choose the frame size accordingly

EG: If the bike fit spits out an ETT of 580mm and a stem length of 120mm (sacrilege) then your total seated reach is 700mm.

You take a stem length of 60-70mm, and you can see that your ideal top tube length is in the region of 630-650mm.

This is all assumption, of course, but it provides you an idea of what you are looking for.

I'd also suggest that you go for a large frame with shorter stem instead of a smaller frame with longer stem. 70mm plus stems belong on road bikes.

according to that I must be on a L

I'm 187cm and on an XL Anthem X

pretty sure they used roadbike guidance when they built that chart i.e. when you can correct sizing by playing with stem length

I doubt it. My dad is 186 cm and fits perfectly onto a large anthem frame ( with a bike fit done). At 191 cm I am just outside the correct sizing for a large frame.

Also had a bike fit done. My calculated ETT is 5mm longer than what the XL Anthem could give me.

That chart is really just a guidance.

Any decent bike fit is the answer getting the proper size.

As long as you ignore their advice for a stem measurement. EEK.

Take the ETT and stem measurement together. Don't accept the "custom generated" stem length, or if you can, tell them to use a stem measurement of 60/70mm and no more.

On the stem length as well. My opinion too short a stem on a large or extra large frame does affect the handling ability just as much as a too long stem can. Riding a larger frame for you with a shorter stem is just as bad as riding a small from with a very long stem. Ideal would be between 90-110mm for large or extra large framed bike.

You get bikes fits and then you get bikes fits. Some bike fits only generate estimated set up values from static measurements taken. Others use a dynamic measurement system as well which is a lot more accurate. The set up a computer generates can't take into account how flexible you are and if you have had any previous injuries etc.

Negative. That's roadie mentality, and has no place near MTBs

On a large framed bike, the axle to crown measurement and trail do not change with the size.

A longer stem hinders handling no matter which way you cut it. On an MTB, unless you're Schurter or Absolon (where climbing is where you earn your seconds) or spend all your time on jeep track with moderate grades, then anything above 70mm should not be considered at all.
