Hey guys & gals,

Anyone planning a pre-race ride of the PPA One Tonner route prior to 18th/10?

Was just wondering...(if anyone was contemplating such a "little trip")

I would like to go over Botmaskop before the 18th.

Guess I will :-)

I will see you there on the 18th.....because this year I plan to take the 1 Tonner in one HUGE GULP! :)  Come what may, I don't want to break my enthusiasm before the 18th! I guess I'll be sucking wheel like never before, especially if the wind is as bad as it was 2 years ago.

Gosh! And I was planning to let the gentlemen do all the work on the 18th  . It seems no one doing the route prior... ?, damn. I watched it last year from the back seat of a car, and the wind was howling then too. It will be my first time...Going to be fearless fun!!! Can't wait!

Man I'm sad to be missing it this year.  Had to make a choice between Amashova and 1 Tonner.  Last year they were a week apart so did both.

Stellenbosch rules...leave the Amashova and come down here  !

The secret of riding this race as an individual, is to find yourself a bunch of about the same ability and to work together for the whole distance. Many Double Century teams use it as a practice run and if you want to fall in with one of those, just ask nicely and don't get in the way of their functioning. They often don't mind you hanging on the back. The first half, until about the turnaround point at Botmaskop, you should feel like you are just cruising and going too easy. Then you should be riding comfortably for the  third quarter of the distance and for the last quarter just survive. Wind is always the BIG issue and will make working together even more critical. Feeding and keeping hydrated is also critical for a race of this distance, especially if it is hot. Make sure you don't forget it, especially in the first half when the going is easy. Stretch regularly along the way to keep the neck and back from cramping up on you later on. Lastly, when everyone is tired and losing focus in the last 30 or 40 km, keep wide awake and avoid crashes by staying out of the dangerous places, avoid overlapping wheels and anticipate trouble, don't ride head down zombie style.

The first half, until about the turnaround point at Botmaskop,

You guys had me confused - couldn't understand why you would organise a group ride to go up Botmaskop as it is right here in Stellenbosch

Google helped me right - the turning point pass at Riebeeck Kasteel is Botmaskloof - a bit confusing..

Route recce always a good thing but tbh there is nothing particularly noteworthy about Botmaskloof, just a medium sized climb in the middle of the race, but the most likely place to get dropped in the race if you are not awake.

I find the pace often slows down the few km's before Botmaskloof, resist the tempatation to pull the group or try to catch the next group ahead, just relax, eat a gu & hydrate (and whatever you do don't stop at the waterpoint at the bottom of the pas if you have any ambition of staying with your group for the whole race). Up the pass and for the next few km's until the Malmesbury turnoff the pace is usually hectic, so don't hold back, the group will slow down & give you chance to recover once you get to the R304.

People will disagree with me but I think if you are reasonably fit and have a semi-decent seeding this is one of the easier races to do well in. Except for the Botmaskop & Botmaskloof climbs, there are no big climbs, very few attacks & break-aways and together with all the DC training groups you can have an easy wheelsucky ride for most of the race.

That wind was hectic. Rode easy till Malmesbury. From Malmesbury back to Stellenbosch took me 2h20. Suffered BIG time.

They should change the route by taking us over Helshoogte, over Franschoek pass, over Bainskloof, over Bothmaskop, back over helshoogte to the finish. At least 20% of the field should either not make it or not make cut off at least. Enough with these pissy races we have in this country
