Cape Epic Route 2016: Any speculation?

I would think its a bit strange for someone living in Paarl or Wellington, sort of like having an early brekkie, drop the kids at school for swim training, get the wife to drop you at the start go for a longish ride, hitch a lift home and repeat for a couple of days - of course nothing beats the hype of the worlds biggest mtb race, but it certainly has a very Origin of Trails type feel.

now can we please see this chart again, but in R/m climbed, and R/km cycled since 2004.

Fill in the blanks if you can, would be interesting to see what the team entry fee was for 2004 and what it will be for 2017!

2004 = R / 788km = per km

2005 = R / 898km = per km

2006 = R / 940km = per km

2007 = R/ 886km = per km

2008 = R/ 966km = per km

2009 = R / 683km = per km

2010 = R 12,500 / 722km = R 17.31 per km per team

2011 = R / 707km = per km

2012 = R / 781km = per km

2013 = R / 706km = per km

2014 = R 45,900 / 729km = R 62.96 per km per team

2015 = R 54,900 / 739km = R 74.28 per km per team (Entry fee not 100% sure)

2016 = R 59,600 / 647km = R 92.11 per km per team

2017 = R 65,200 / 680km = R 95.88(my guesstimate, no fancy maths, just a thumbsuck)

For me the epic has become "who's got the deepest pockets" as well as the huge hype around the ef'ing "celebrities".

Nowadays if someone tells me (other than a pro rider or lucky enough being sponsored by someone) they've done the epic recently my immediately thought is that this oke must be loaded while the hardcore factor is being diluted more and more. That said, I would still love to ride it every year if money was no object.

Shortest Epic in terms of KM ever

Longest Stage of 106Km is shortest in Epic history

Only 1 day over 2300m

The "Epic" part of the Epic is when you need to dig deep, its the KM's after 100 and the climbing after 2000M, 2016 has virtually none of that.

Yes they have the highest number of vertical m/Km, but that's because they have reduced the KM, not because they increased the climbing

Have you ridden the 2016 route? How does the terrain (rockiness, sand, technicality, gradients) compare to other years?

Because it is shorter it is easier?

Another interesting stat would be R per race village per year.

Some people can afford Ferrari's, others drive clapped out Corollas - it's a fact of life, who cares. I certainly don't have heaps of cash but I spend money on stuff that I love and make sacrifices elsewhere.

Back to the route - I admit to feeling a bit of disappointment at the words 'shortest ever Epic'.

But I am sure it will still be an awesome experience, especially coming from overseas to ride some of those cool trails (I did the race this year and LOVED Welvanpas).

I like the fact they are mixing it up - most people would agree more ST is a positive.

I just hope they stagger the starts a bit - man I was pretty appalled at the level of skill and lack of trail etiquette for passing, walking off the riding line etc.

Stoked they are keeping the prologue at UCT, just seems like a great iconic location.

Look 2016 is an Olympic year. A super tough cape epic is not going to attract a hell of a lot of pro riders. So may as well make it fun and keep them coming in.

Guarantee that it's not as easy as some suggest. This is basically 6 Nissan trailseekers over consecutive days....

It won't attract too many the guys aiming for the Olympics in any case. . Regardless of distance etc.

especially for those that still have to qualify for RIO.

Shorter distances doesn't necessarily mean easier riding.. have a look at the Swiss epic's racing this year.. it was definitely not easy.

BUT shorter stages will make for very interesting racing, for those that do come

Yeah, don't forget that the Rand is worth as much as crap paper, so the epic has become too expensive for the majority of locals.

Im just dissapointed with route for the lack originality and adventure.  The epic should be all about riding in wilderness that you would normally never be allowed to ride or be aware that it existed  etc.  It should feel remote, special, unique, some might say "epic".  But this year the route is basically the well worn trails we Capies ride pretty much every weekend.  If im going to drop R30k on a race/ride i want to experience something special (not saying this year epic wont be a great experience but for me i would want something more "exotic"  .  I think the Cape Pioneer and JHB2C offer this .

Anyway those who are in i will be watching you guys ride "my trails" with a nice cold beer in my hand and wishing i was you. :thumbup:   Good Luck

That would be Stage 3, also heard that it would be a 160km(100miler) stage.

With regards to the 100th stage: Pink lady apples who own a farm that hosts part of the trail for stage 100 are considering making 5 picture frames from the wood used in bridge construction on the trail.(bridges to be disassembled after event)

They plan to offer these by online auction to raise funds for charity. The frame will have space for a rider photo and the Cape Epic finisher medal.

Good idea or waste of time?
