I cannot believe the amount of topics here. Its crazy to think that this is probably just the tip of the iceberg in regard to bike theft in South Africa.

Sorry for the trauma suffered and your loss guys and girls.

There's some rooms/sheds/outhouses/warehouses out there right at this very moment packed to the ceiling with stolen high end bikes.

And there are buyers lined up because theives don't steal stuff for which there's no easy resale market. Considering the scale of high end bike theft the resale market must be huge and insatiable.

Who is buying these stolen bikes and where?

lots of us are buying bits of them right here on the bikehub im sure

Which sellers?

Most okes just sell their odd bits n pieces, that's not the way thieves sell stuff, thieves need to move volumes, or if it's one of Mr Xmas tree's ten thousand ads just look at what was for sale the day before to see where he got it from.

I will probably be lambasted for being prejudiced but on a daily basis see guys commuting on mid- to high-end bikes which they surely could not afford.

A mate of mine bought himself a Merida Big 9 XT Edition and his wife a silverback 279 on Wednesday last week. One ride at Giba on Thursday, both bikes stolen from his garage on Thursday night. These days it's not if the steal, it's when they steal my bike.

The man is devastated. t

My friends bicycle was stolen 2 weeks ago after a race from a bike rack. It was then advertised on gumtree and spotted by him. He went with the police to the seller in Brackenfell and got his bike back. He told me the guy had a room full of bicycles. I will get the police captains number and maybe people that had bikes stolen can contact him. He is from the Darling police station. The seller apparantly bought the bike from someone.

No dude. Mr xmas tree is legit and damn that dude has skills for days and days. I ride with a whole bunch of blokes that know him.

And even worse ... I better start shaving more regularly before I go for a ride AND dress like a spanky pro instead of looking like a Kaapse Klops (so drivers can see me) or else ... Might just get pulled over as suspect.

That's your thief right there...the "I bought it from someone else " is a BS excuse ....????????

I bought it from someone is barely one step more believable than " I woke up this morning at it was just standing there, in my garden". Thieving scum.

Ive said it before, but plenty mid level bikes bikes going over the border to places like Mozambique and Malawi. I often come across fairly decent bikes in small villages, the owners buy them from the markets for a fraction of second hand cost in SA.

there are plenty (majority) honest sellers on the hub so im not running a sneaky accusation at anybody so don't name names

just think about this and I only speak from experience in western cape (mine and mates who ride)

sellers who come on the hub -no other posts- with "bits" that when you go look at said bits theres no "well im upgrading my whatever or I replaced this with that " some of them don't know much about what they are selling (or bikes sometimes) and most are cheapish pricing and its always random untraceable parts

I really think there is an underground auction system going (which there is for other types of stolen goods) and sometimes those weird homeless parts find there way onto our classifieds

who can prove that a saddle or a pair of carbon pedals(sorry no cleats ??) or a drive train with clipped off cables?  belonged on their stolen bike - all these bits are untraceable and we can wind up buying them

the ones that we don't get to buy wind up in the hands of unscrupulous cyclists who build up fantastic spec bikes for themselves (and connections) or ratty bikes for sale to the uncaring

theres no reason to keep stealing top end stuff if it has no where to go hence it goes somewhere and one of the somewheres is right here   sad but true
