M775 XT Wheelset Freehub replacement

My freehub on my M775 XT wheelset started to act up a week or so ago. Every now and then the freehub would "catch" while freewheeling causing the chain to go slack. It that is the proper way to describe it.

My question is are all Shimano 9 speed freewheels interchangeable or can I only use the specific part as the one that needs to be replaced? It seems the specific freehub isn't that easy to find. The part number is Y-3CZ 98050.

I've contacted a few bike shops and during the week only one has come back to me on buying a replacement freewheel. I requested a price on the complete Xt 24 hole, straight pull spoke in my last email to them and now silence. They probably feel I'm not serious or it isn't worth their while to do business with me.

The price difference in the freehub body and the complete hub isn't that much, would it make more sense in buying the complete hub and transferring the internals or just getting the freehub? If the wheel has to be rebuilt I would just as well buy a new wheelset with the spokes on the XT wheelset costing R90-00 a spoke with its nipple, and I'm not sure if the spokes will be usable again after the wheel is take apart.

Any advise or help will be appreciated.

I used to have this wheel set and I don't know if its a Shimano thing or not but so far I have replaced one the 775 and about 4 on a 475 hub!

I got one from Cajees in Princess Crossing for the 775 last year but they did have to take one off a wheelset they had laying around as apparently they are not so easy to come buy now.

Personally if you can afford to I would scrap them , as you rightly mentioned the spokes are a crazy price, you need a special spoke spanner for them too and on my wheelset there were only 24 spokes, if you want to do events over a couple of days or go rural it can be a problem as hardly any bike shops will stock these. This was the original wheelset on my Trance! When I sold it ( :( ) I gave the spare spokes and spanner (which I bought when I did a trip down to Vryheid to cover myself) to the new buyer. Hopefully he hasn't had to use them...

A tip with the 775 set, if you lose the funny little end piece on the end of the spoke that goes into the hub you can take a spoke nipple, cut it down to size and use that. Things you learn when bike shops are many K's away...!

I read somewhere that you can take the free hub, soak it in petrol and give it a good swilling around to clean it. Let it thoroughly dry then add a few drops of gear oil to it where the body rotates on the base. If yours is on its way out maybe its an 'if all else fails' option for you!

I was told to rather look at Novatec hubs next time round....

Thanks Mojoman

I'll be on the wife's Silverback next week while the wheel is in pieces again and I'm going to try soaking the freehub in a degreaser as I saw a couple guys talk about on a different forum.

Will remember the tip about the nipple, thank you.

Hi Gerrie,

A few months back my xt hub had quite a bit of play on it (not the same as your issue but thought i would share my experience with you) and i too was looking to replace the freehub.

Scary how that freehub was about the same price as an entire hub so i decided to buy a new xt hub and while i was at it i replaced the spokes and nipples and had the wheel built up again.

I also did not have that monster allen key required to remove the hub myself

It runs perfectly now and happy with it.

Ja, I forgot about that, that was another R100!

Thanks for the info AlanD. I'm still weighing up my options while I'm still waiting for possible replies from the bike shops that I've done business with in the past. Seems I might have to start to contact more shops.

Last time I wanted to replace the axle on the hub I emailed all the internet shops that I know of and only received one reply from a certain shop in Cape Town about two weeks later.

The shop I contacted in Pretoria still hasn't contacted me back on that one and it seems I will not receive an answer from them on the freewheel issue also.

AlanD, Where did you get the hub from?

The straight pull XT hub will not be available to buy separately...That is just the way it is, push your bike shop to ask Coolheat for a compatible freehub as some are interchangeable I feel that the guys are sometimes not inclined to do a little more digging to help find a solution.

The next problem is stock availability, more often than not I have heard and been told that yes this other part will fit but we don't have stock - so back to square one.

I think the parts backup from Shimano locally has slipped over the last few years...

Thanks for the information Skinnyone. Was hoping that the shops I contacted would contact the suppliers as it might lead to a sale for them. I did ask for a compatible one if they can't find the exact part required.

Will contact them again to try and pressure them.
