Anyone thinking of / planning to do the 1000 miler: Joberg to Cape Town for 2016?

The 1000 Miler runs annually in June from Johannesburg to Cape Town and is designed to take the riders on as much dirt road as is possible between the two iconic cities. Riders will have 11 days to complete the distance and checkpoint cut offs will apply. The race incorporates the Free State Dash between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein approximately 450 kilometers and The Karoo Dash between Bloemfontein and Cape Town approximately 1000 kilometers. Riders must comply and agree to the…

Really keen to do it and start prepping for it, will be extremely cold June / July.

Not sure how much advertising has been done, its perfect for those that moan about the big stage events being so expensive.

New race Andy is putting on.

With Trans Africa, Durban dash, and hopefully Route 62 dash, I probably wont have enough leave for this one.

tell us a bit more about the Route 62 edition...could be a bit 'short'

Capetown to PE. Web site clams approximately 750 km, but if you have to avoid the N2 - which is most likely, then it will be about 830km. Usual rules: checkpoints, pick your own route, unsupported. I'll going to try find out from Andy what the checkpoints will be.

This is the tourist route: https://www.google.co.za/maps/dir/231+Eden+on+the+Bay,+Otto+du+Plessis+Dr,+Bloubergstrand,+Cape+Town,+7441/-33.9589845,25.6062318/@-33.5069735,21.2011049,7.5z/data=!4m26!4m25!1m20!1m1!1s0x1dccf565c1c3dce1:0x505d3cd4dcd729c1!2m2!1d18.4576498!2d-33.7919473!3m4!1m2!1d18.9777823!2d-33.6480081!3s0x1dcd06122994733f:0xf9aae3c6e09c8b93!3m4!1m2!1d19.1500731!2d-33.3254448!3s0x1dcd3fb64cf7575d:0xa3dd242dbc28df04!3m4!1m2!1d22.904966!2d-33.5367122!3s0x1e7f45fe5bf49327:0x4e7d0bb29c1ccf7!1m0!2m1!1b1!3e0?hl=en

Checkpoints could obviously change things. There are a lot of interesting passes close to the route, e.g. Bain's Kloof pass, Swartberg pass, Price Alfred pass, Groot Rivier pass + Bloukrans pass

Looks interesting to me, June suits me much better in terms of leave and temperature than October for Trans Africa, I also prefer the gravel roads for that type of event. Are there and recommendations on routes at this point?

No recommendations yet, will be interesting to see where the checkpoints will be. The mostly gravel route will make it interesting.
