Giro 2016 - Best tour operator?

Hi,

The wife wants to go Italy next year, and I want to ride the Giro.... so SCORE.

So for those who have done it before, which tour operators are the ones to speak too?

We want to be there for about 10 days, she wants to ride some of the route, or just the easy ones.

I will obviously want to ride each day possible. It will be good if there is stuff for the non cyclists to do too, and its important to me that she has stuff to do if she doesn't want to ride.

What I don't want is a hassle and having to arrange the logistics myself.

Any advice will be appreciated.

I organised my own Tour de France tour this year, but it does involve a good bit of planning (and a sober driver).

A tour operator isn't a bad bet but I have heard that the commercial ones like Thompsons aren't the best as the literally drop you off in the morning and rush you off as the stage finishes. The above mentioned one looks a decent bet.

Thanks for that.. Thompson was the current one we were looking at. Good thing you popped past :)

Look more into it, thats just the story I heard from a couple of people at this years Tour.

Also go checkout tripadvisor.com and I'm sure you will find great insight and info there.

There s also Trek Travel.

They even set you up with there latest top bikes and you get to chat with the factory riders in the evening and stay in the same hotels.

Not the cheapest but you get same backup as the pros. replacement wheels and bike if broken etc.etc..

They also do tour de france and la vuleta.

A few of us did this last year and saved huge when it came to costs by doing our own tour.

Find the stages that interest you over a week and base yourself within 60km of those stages of final climbs or 2nd final climbs etc and then create routes on Strava and go ride them. There are so many riders out there you just join them and follow.

In a Tour group you herded like sheep and there is no real time to enjoy the moment at your own leisure.

Check out these guys - an 'all-in' solution but not the cheapest: http://ingamba.pro

Then consider a trip to Italy in July (TdF time) - There is an incredible granfondo in Bassano the first weekend of July and then the Pinarello Granfondo the second weekend - best Italian riding on the planet is in and around Bassano/Treviso area according to Heinrich (ASG co-owner) but then he is biased because our Italian business (Ftech and SCICON) is based there and he basically lives there :) - Monte Grappa, Asiago, Assolo, Marostica, etc. and then not far away from some other epic passes and routes)... you can then make your way to France for the finish of the TdF the third weekend? Heinrich/ASG invites 35 guests and their partners to Treviso every year to participate in the Pinarello Granfondo - you'll probably have to invest in an F8 to make the cut for this one though :) !!

Enjoy - every cyclists should at least once in their life go ride in Italy!!
