Vets racing bad for your heart?

Well ... If you do he's not in front of you no more. Just a thought. :whistling: :whistling:

You right, I'm too old to worry about being a racer and considering the topic of this thread ... suppose that's a good thing ... trying to stay alive longer?

The only time you need to be in front is at the finish line.

That means that quite often there's a guy two minutes in front of you in the middle of the race, and you do have to pedal faster than him.  So quite often you do have to ride faster than the guy in front of you, for extended periods.

... not that I'm either of these peeps.

47 and often train at 90% + effort especially track sessions (running) and racing at high intensity chancing the youngsters especially Olympic Distance triathlons. I often wonder what this is doing to my heart but always just shrug it off. As the saying goes, better to burn out than fade away.

It's a nice saying, until you lie in intensive care attached to all kind of pipes & machines - then you kind of hope there is also a 3rd option  :whistling:

For the guys that just want to be healthy fit all of this should be of no concern. It's when we're trying to get close to our genetic potential (or when the ego takes over:)) that we start pushing the envelope. I'm one of those guys that races to train, training is more important than the race. Raced and trained at close to my limits as a runner 20 years ago - didn't feel healthy and was tired all the time but ran fast. (fast is relative...) The holy grail for me is finding a level of training that keeps me at about 80-90% of my potential, very fit but not near my limits.

I prefer the school of thought that suggested I can eat whatever I want, (processed meats: chorizzo, salami, pastrami, pancetta) included and then ride my bike as much and as hard as I want to burn it off and I'll be fine.

This thread suggest having those delicacies is a risk and then riding my bike hard makes it even worse. How depressing is that?
