Yzerfontein

1/2 hours drive from Cape Town

Fat bike heaven with 16-mile beach running in the direction of Langebaan and about 40 kilometers of beach running in the direction of Cape Town.

Can I please re-open this thread... and ask for input. Other than Scooterza for whom work doesn't seem to be a factor, my requirements are a little different.

Also planning on leaving Gauteng and making the move down to western cape. My requirements are a little bit of everything; so I know I will not be satisfied with everything, but would like to get some input/opinions.

Work:

I've got a couple of options in terms of work - locations are mostly in CPT CBD. So, in terms of travelling for normal office hour job to CPT CBD, which 'outlying' areas (like SW, Stellies, Paarl, Durbanville) is viable? What typically can one expect in terms of travel time? i'm an early/morning person an normally am at work by 7:15 (currently leaving home 6:50).

Schools/kids:

Girl is 10 and in grade 5. Boy is 12 & in grade 7. Would love to move this year so he can start high school in WC. So, in terms of schools; looking for good AFRIKAANS schools (both primary and highschool).

In terms of activities my kids both does gymnastics (non school sports - currently). So would lile them to continue doing that as both got Gauteng colours the past couple of years. They do other activities; but not as important as the gymnastics.

Living:

Currently we stay in a typical security estate in Gauteng (PTA). Stand is 1000sq.m. and home 300 sq.m. My wife and I love the mountains. So, we'd like to stay in a 'lifestyle' estate with similar size stand/home; with views of the mountains, open space, freedom, etc. We're both active in terms of cyling (me) and running (both of us). So a big estate in which she can safely run on her own would be great. We like a place that would give you a typical country feel in terms of living; away from the huzzle of everyday life.

So, herewith my question... Are there such estates in close proximity to good AFR schools that are within driving distance to CPT CBD.

Would be great to get some input as we're down in WC week after next to scout options ????

Paarl has great schools and has the top rated Municipality in the country. Summer gets effing hot though.

Noordhoek is awesome if you can find a spot. Cycling spots are world class and great schools over the hill/mountain.

Traveling from SSW, Stellenbosch or Paarl to CBD will take min 2 hours in and 90 minutes home unless you can work serious flexi time. My wife travels 90 minutes mornings from SSW to Pinelands. She leaves at 5:45am and drops our son off at creche in Pinelands at 7:15am. If you can find something where you work from 6am to 3pm traffic will be ok-ish (afternoons start backing up from 2pm some days). Work in Northern subs, Southern subs or Boland, and peak times reduce to about 60 to 90 minutes for a 20km commute.

Somerset West area. Full stop.

1. Helderberg farm for ruthless MTB climbing

2. Wannabee MTB routes for easy riding through the vineyards

3. Jonkershoek around the corner

4. Grabouw, Elgin, Oak Valley, Paul Cluver just over the mountain

5. Most picturesque road to Rooi Els for an easy cycle on your roadie

6. The Pump Station climb on your roadie for good resistance training

7. The High School with the best cycling team in the WC, Parel Vallei.

What else did I miss?

The part of commuting to CPT CBD

Which lifestyle estates in SSW are good considerations?

afrikaans schools?

Parel Vallei is a mixed language high school.  De Hoop and Beaumont is both mixed language primary schools.

There are lots of estates in the area, but seriously, crime is not so much an issue that a security estate should be a deciding factor.

O, I forgot the Eden, Paradyskloof route with G-Spot for playing.

Thanks; much appreciated. Thing is; my wife and kids have been victim of being held at gun-point; so unfortunately for me/them it's non negotiable (even if it's a false sense of security).

Which estates in SSW is worth looking into?

Fernwood, Fairhaven are some I know of on the south eastern part of Somerset West.  My son's one school friend stays in Fairhaven.   There are quite a few in that part of town, all overlooking the sea and mountains.

I stay in Strand, where 'normal' people stay.  :whistling:

???? thanks again....

We were normal once... But after a trauma like that one will never be normal again ????

Will checkout those estates! Thanks!
