Stem length - pain between shoulder blades

Funny how most bikes are sold with those long ass stems. Had a 100mm on my bike, which I quickly switched out for an 80mm, which is the best of both worlds in my opinion. More control on the technical hits, but still able to put weight over the front for climbing. Paired with a 720mm handlebar

Yes, and extreme cases 80mm. If you have to put anything bigger on, you're on the wrong size bike

MM Been reading this whole thread and all I can add without any knowledge on this effen subject is ... your arguments make sense. When I survive the DC and start dusting off my MTB, I will surely hope to remember your points and check out my set-up a bit more. Thanx for sharing.

Thanks to everyone who gave their inputs. Ive applied my mind and ordered the 780mm bar and 60mm stem. Cant wait to try it out!!!

Just remember. Before you cut to what you think is the right width, put the grips on at the outermost and slowly move them in. 5mm per side at a time, until it feels comfortable. Then reset to max width, test again and check to see if the width was correct or if you were just imagining things. Test test test.

 

Best to find a piece of trail that you're familiar with and had a reasonable level of difficulty that you can do over and over again. Test test test. Then wait. Reassess. Test test test again. Remember you can always cut, but you can't add.

I did the exact same thing based on Myles advise. Started with stem that made s great difference and then got the rapide bars and never looked back. You will feel the difference and realize that Myles knows what's he talking about.

 

Made a point to give feedback aftet your first ride.

On that note, I am still trying to find the right lenght. Thought I had it at 1cm each side in (778mm), at 2cm in each side it felt way too short.

 

The last ride I set it at full bar (780mm) and felt better than 778mm. Its tough to find the right lenght and reluctant to cut because as you say you cant add on bar:)

Upper pain is a typical symptom of your reach being to long. 

Lower back pain being to short.

Someone did mention core strength and they are right.

 

No matter what your setup, the fact that it only hurts you with distance of 40km + could point to it being a fatigue thing. I.e the muscle has the ability to do the work to hold you up but not the endurance.

 

The particular muscle that is involved in shoulder stability is called serratus anterior.

 

www.shoulderdoc.co.uk is a great resource to look up some exercises to help strengthen it.

 

Cyclists will train for hours on end but don't want to spend 10min a day doing some rehab. go figure?

 

Burning between the blades is also a symptoms of a tight thoracic spine and potential cervical spine issues.

ride the bike for at least 2 weeks before you cut the bars, as the wide feeling might seem weird when you convert from something narrow.  i'm on 800mm; 15mm rise bars with a 50mm stem and nobody will ever sell me bars that are narrower or stems that are longer again.
