Avid Elixir 5 Service kits

Good Morning fellow hubbers,

I'm back with yet again a probably funny request for technical help. I recently acquired a set of avid elixir 5 (2009 model) brakes from a fellow hubber, but upon inspection last night I found that the caliper pistons were seized up and the rear brake lever was leaking on the olive.

I managed to take the calipers apart and get the pistons out. the piston seals are a wee bit shot from wear and tare.

Where can one buy these seals (for two calipers)? Can anyone maybe assists?

Thank you in advance.

Happy Friday

Your LBS can order from the agents, at last count they had caliper and piston kits.

I struggled to find matchmakers from my lbs, I doubt that they will get the caliper kits. Can you maybe suggest a shop to try?

Basically just need the two small o-rings as well as the 4 caliper seals.

I ask Droo to get the kit for you and pick it up from him when you come to town.

Had my brakes redone but by agents (warranty)

Love my Avids

Rather spend your money buying Shimano SLX brakes - trust me on this one.

I have Shimano (deore) brakes on my other bike, but like my elixirs. had a set of elixir 5's and cr's on previous build i did, and loved them. to be honest, prefer the elixir.

I found that with my shimano's, the brakes stiffen up if I ride very technical terrain where I have to use my brakes more often. Had them bled, but they still do it. never had that issue with avids. Apart from my issue now, my avids was smooth sailing all the way.

Take the avids to Darryn at Williams Bike shop. He has rebuilt a couple of Avids for friends of mine. So he should be able to supply you with te service kit. He is amazing with Avid brakes, I'll just leave it with him to do if I were you.

William is based in Somerset West if I am correct?

The Avids are amazing when they work, but a bit of a las when they get old. Like a Land Rover.

The latest shimano brakes are considerbly bbetter than the old ones, their older brakes are terrible. THey are only now coming to the point where I will consider Shimano above Avid, but ten Avid came and threw the apple cart over with the nnew Guides.

Put it like this: The new Shimano Deore discs on one of my bikes, are only now as good as the 5year old Avids on my SS ito brake feel and how well they modulate and handle heat.

Go get the Avids rebuilt (or DIY,) they will feel like brand new brakes, and you'll be happy for a looooong while.

+1. Darryn knows what he's doing and he's pretty close to you.

Was only a matter of time...

There are some Elixir 5's that perform well. There are also some Land Rovers that don't give any problems and 20 year old Alfa Romeos that have no rust

Also, Fox forks are all rubbish cos the stanchion coatings wear out?

Bleed Avids properly and rebuild them every 3 years and they'll last forever. My Juicy 7s are 9 years old and still going strong.
