Replacement of cassette/chain

Following on to the ruined 94.7 race thread, it got me thinking.

My current cassette has 20 000plus kms on it and the chain about 17 000plus kms on it.

I bought a new cassette and chain about 4 years ago and it's still sitting in my garage waiting for me to fit.

My current set up works perfectly, but I think it's time for the new parts to be fitted.

My question is, having such high mileage on my current drivetrain, will I need to replace the chain rings too?

I'm worried the chain will slip on the front.

Most likely... You should buy a chain measure (not expensive), and replace it before it gets to 50% worn. That way to will preserve the cluster and front chain rings.

Now its going to cost some big $

Inch ruler is what you need...those chainwear measurer's were designed to sell new chains  I once bought a new chain and measured it just out of interest ^_^ According to the chainwear measurer the chain needed to be replaced

Actually, I think I've saved some money. If you go on the principle of a new cassette after every second chain and the principle that a chain should be changed every 2500 to 3000kms. By now, I should have bought 3 cassettes and 6 chains. In today's terms thats about R3 300.
