Another timing chip company

Is that a think coming from Racetec or the event organisers themselves?

What motive would a race organizer have by strictly enforcing the no chip no ride rule, surely this would chase away riders who would have entered (paid) but don't necessary want to be timed.

Me (trolling the interwebs): this looks like a cool race. Haven't raced in that part of Gauteng yet. Let's do this

Website: You need a timing chip from TheManCompany. Please pay 1 MiLLyOn DoLLars.

Me: Screw you.

Also, the different seeding thingies. I have a good seeding with SASeeding. Did my first 94.7, got kicked back to the second last Open group. My mate is doing his 1st CYCLE RACE EVER, he starts in like group D. He's an ultra marathon runner though, but still?

Short answer... data

Both the organisers and Racetec want the data. There is massive value in understanding the demographics and numbers of your race particpants. All your info is linked to your chip.

To have bragging rights......"the biggest timed event in the world"...

*and we all go ...hooooooooo*

Can't believe people complain about little stuff like this. With the amount you spend on cycling will a R150 chip that you can use for years really hurt your pocket? I've had my Champion Chip for 13 years now. RaceTech chip for 13 Years and my SA Seeding board since 2012. I have done countless races with them and their cost has never bothered me. If you don't want to buy a chip, don't do the race.

On the whole competition vs standardised discussion. Racetec is really expensive for smaller event organisers to use, which is wrong imo because lets face it, it's not exactly new technology, it's essentially the same system they had 5 years ago when I started cycling.

It would be interesting to see what happens in future as timing technology improves & gets more affordable and catches up with Racetec, my gut feel is that that Racetec will wake up one day and find their expensive system & business model obsolute.

I do a bunch of races that don't even use a timing chip.

Ideally the seeding isn't linked to a chip, it's linked to your results in similar races.

Way, way to much of a power struggle in a tiny pond.

It is not really about the costs of a chip, because as you say the costs is so small and it last forever. I spend more on car guards in a month that I have on the timing chips that I have. It is more about having your results counting towards a centralized seeding table.

They will you are right but if they have all the historic race results data, they will just move to generating revenue from that....

If you want to talk about seeding databases that is a whole different story.

I do believe we need a national database for seeding. One for mountain biking events and another for road events.

Not too fussed about the timing chip but having one central body co-ordinating your national seeding would be great. Shouldn't that be the CSA?

PPA has a monopoly on Racetec so other event users can't use their timing system and database.

SASeeding seems to be the only nationl seeding system at the moment and I like the fact you have a permanent number.

TRail Tag is not just a timing chip but also potentially an access mechanism for trails in the western cape.

But which chip to rule them all?

Ah ok. The way I read his rant I thought it's about the cost of another chip.

I totally agree on having a centralized national database and all the timing companies have to submit their data to that database. MTB and Road will have to be split though.

That historic data will probably be worth something for another year, maybe 2? Point is just, in the world of technology you can become irrelevant overnight - few years ago Racetec were offering benefits no one else could, not anymore.

It probably was, but it wasnt a well thought out rant, so it got hijacked for the greater good :P

Nope. The beauty of Racetecis that both contribute to your racetec seeding so you can compete in whatever you like and still have it count toward Argust
