AM Classic Argents - Opinions

So I'm looking at replacing my American Classic Aero 420's with a set of American Classic Argent Toobless road wheels.

Just wondering if anyone else has them out there and what their opinions are.

They are nice and wide, seem strong and come in at about 1300gms for the set.... Doesn't seem to be much of a drawback.

Avoid like the plague. Spokes are very fragile, I think American Classic let themselves down with these wheels.

Can I ask why you want to change from the Aero 420's? I was thinking about changing my set of Fulcrums for the 420's for something abit more "aero" for everyday use.

To be honest I'm 110% happy with my Aeros. They are by far one of the best wheels I've owned. Had my current pair for 3+ years and never had a single issue. Lighter than most of my mates carbons. Fast on the flats, don't get too tugged about in the CT cross winds. I'd recommend them hands down as a true all rounder as I use them for everything from training to racing.

Truth is (and it's a bit lame to admit) but I've just got a new bike and kept the Aeros when I sold my TCR as that and the Evo would be a great match... only issue is they just don't look right on it. It's black on black frame and the red n white looks odd so I was just going to sell them and get a new pair (in black) but then saw the Argents and heard good reports about them esp with 22mm width.

Might want to look at the Easton EA90 SLX tubeless also. No idea of how they are

Thanks buddy, I was thinking about them but I rate the AMC hubs and am not going near Easton again since a spoke failed on my EC70s, broke the flange on the hub and Easton rep here the couldn't sell me a hub but I could purchase a new set of wheels if I liked. WTF???

Snapped a spoke on EC70's? that would add you to a very long list of people I have heard about snapping spokes on those wheels.

Theres not that many of them and hat there is isn't of very good quality. Best part of those wheels are the rims

Maybe I'll just upgrade my 420s to the new model and hunt some decent 18 / 24 hubs to rebuild the ec70s rather than the argent.

Problem is finding good hubs that aren't just novatec or circus monkey. I guess AMCs are an option but I'm guessing they are fairly pricey for the pair.

I thought they were the same bladed spokes as the rest of the range. After a bit of looking about I've seen that the Argents tend to get loose alot more than much of the AMC range.

go for the Victory 30 Tubeless. Very nice wheelset at a superb price.

All of the boutique wheelsets have a major issue that you need to live with.

Mavic have the mysterious tightening pre load adjuster on their hubs

American Classis have one or two wheelsets with spoke issue, possibly due to the rim being too light

NoTubes Alpha 300 are weak and don't last.

Best boutique wheelsets are either Campagnolo or Shimano in the lower price ranges. Once you get to R15k, you're spoiled for choice.

But in the lower price range American Classic Victory 30 is about as solid as you get.

The Argent is a nice light wheel, but it is not as strong as the 420 Aero 3. My friend had his wheel replaced 3 times, and then desided to upgrade to the carbon 40. They kept cracking at the eyelets. I recently upgraded from the lighter sprint 350 to the 420 Aero 3 and the 420 aero 3 are much beter. If you really want to upgrade, go for the carbon 40. They cost about R17 000 at Evobikes.
