Wide range cassette with 2x10

Why not change the small chainring to 24 tooth? This should help with the climbing. I am not a strong climber at all but manage fine with a 24t front and 36t back.

CWC have a 24t for R110, a lot cheaper than an expander sprocket.

Agree. You can replace your 26 chainring with a 24. For optimal shifting with the 24 you should really also change the 38t ring from type ak to type am which has shift ramps aligned for the 24t.

This will work with either the med cage (GS) or long cage (SGS) rd.

Will make your granny about 8% easier.

Going 11-40 rear will make a bigger difference, about 11% but more costly cos of the Praxis cassette and you might need to change from med to long cage RD. You may also need to add a link or two to the chain.

You sure about that? what's the medium's capacity? thought it was in the 30's. And my 2x10 SLX / XT mix came long cage...

My 38/26 came with the GS RD. Works perfectly with 11-36 at rear.

Capacity of the med. cage RD is 35t and long cage 43t according to Shimano for RD786 shadow plus GS and SGS rear deraillers. I find you can squeeze a bit more from them but at risk of overextending the spring.

I've snapped 3 derailleurs and frankly having the most out of the way mech possible should be a priority. I am very happy with my short cage zee that I got after the last indecent and if I run a 11-36 I can switch between a 34 or a 30 upfront depending on the terrain. I can't imagine needing more. In fact I'm starting to wonder if the single speed guys are on to something. The less there is to go wrong with my bike the more fun I generally have. Nothing spoils your day like clipping you rd on a rock and getting it sucked into your rear wheel... NOTHING!

in that case the 35t capacity won't work for the 38/26 & 11-40 as it comes to 41t total difference. And the SGS capacity is 45t

Unless they're lying. LOL.

EDIT: Looks like I'm referring to the older ones? You're right with the 43t capacity...

Yes I think 11-40 with 2x up front might be pushing it for med. cage RD. Figures I gave were direct from Shimano's website for the RD M786 RD's so theoretically my 38-26 with 11-36 cassette should not work with med cage.....but it did work reliably for over a year until I changed to 1x10 and still using same RD with no problems a year later.

This is why I think Shimano's stated RD capacities can be pushed a bit...

yeah. Much like their "max cassette size" rating...

Another option is Wolftooth Goatlink for 10 spd...

Info here: http://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/products/goatlink

Thanks Naas

Followed the link and read the blurb but maybe I am dof today.

Does this Goatlink replace the standard Shimano link between RD and dropout on the shadow plus RDs?

You push the capacity out a bit by running a slightly longer chain. It means the chain is long to allow the 11/24 to work but it's at an extreme so no biggy.

Set up the drivetrain so the medium cage allows the 13/24 you have a extra capacity
