aaaaannnnnnnddd it happens. the one thing I have been trying to avoid.

Started last nigh - but now I feel right royal grotty. I am now officially sick. Have a cold, with snotty nose, sore shoulders, headaches and of course with the post nasal drip comes tonsillitis.

Off to the doctor for drugs for the tonsillitis and then rest. Hopefully can get on the bike on the weekend. :(

Hope you get well soon Slowbee.

You've completed the Desert Dash before and I'm sure you remember how tired you felt afterwards, the Munga's going to be three times that.

The real test i think is to pace yourself and to get to Sutherland after which you basically fall off the face of the plateau/earth riding into the Tankwa Karoo, that's after +/-700kms in the legs (that's if you didn't make any wrong turns) and then you have the very steep nasty climb after Oubergpas, the looooong climb/drag up and through Karoopoort into Ceres and lastly Bainskloof Pass.

Two months left. How many hours have you spent thus far in the saddle per week and how many hours have you got planned riding, after you get well of course, in the weeks ahead before the Munga?

Nathrix, past 3 weeks have been on holiday - no riding.

Before that though I was managing two hours a day, with about 5 or 6 on the weekends.

The plan is/was when I get back from the holiday to get do 2 hrs per day on the bike week time and weekends get that up to 10 hrs. The training has not been ideal - and I am  no where near as ready as I was for the DD.

Being sick now is not helping - but maybe it is, motivation to get back into life and training is on the up. I dont know If I will be well enough to ride on the weekend. The throat is killing me and the headaches are terrible, even with painkillers. Antibiotics not helping yet - but I will wait till tomorrow morning before I go to the doc again.

On previous stats I posted, my plan is 11-12km/hr, even slower than the DD. This will give me about 4-5 hrs rest per 24 hr period. So it is not completely about fitness - it is more a case of is your body conditioned to sit on a bike for 15 -16 hrs! Mentally each water point is 60-70 km away. And this is how I am approaching this. A series of 60 - 70km rides. Just they are back to back.

Pacing (aka slow) has never been a problem for Slowbee

Anyone done some of the Munga training rides they have going in the Cradle area?

What is the general pace and format?

I'm keen to join as part of my Desert Dash training.

Hi Pulse

Details for the rides can be found on our Facebook page under the 'events' tab: https://www.facebook.com/TheMungaMTB/events

So the last 6hr ride covered 91km. So it is six hours total time. The pace is not slow, nor super fast, and we tend to stop often and let the back markers catch up. At the half-way point we set up a coffee stop where riders can have proper coffee, chocolate croissants, Biogen nutrition and water etc.

The rides are free, but you need to carry basic spares and water etc.

Not sure about nighttime temps as you would need to ask a rider that, but it was not as cold as you would think. But in terms of food, all the five race villages are in towns and are centred in hotels and guesthouses, so the food will all be fresh farm cooked types meals. Chicken pastas, lasagnes, bobotie mince dishes etc. Of course it depends when you get to these villages, so if you arrive in the morning, it would be typical hot breakfast types meals, bacon and eggs, fruit etc.

Hope this helps!

the tables at 60k intervals???

The water-points will have .... water! Thats it.

Just kidding. While they are focused on water, they will also have coke, Biogen product (to top up water bottles, energy bars etc) as well as snacks. These snacks will vary but basically the water-points are being hosted by farms mostly, and the farms are going to make a variety of snacks. So one or two are doing boerie rolls, a couple will do sandwiches, some will do roesterkoeks etc. So do not expect a meal here, it is mainly a water-point where you can also grab a snack, themed both sweet and savoury.
