Kranskop Classic (Druiwefees Cycle Race)

Being from Nylstroom from School days, I remember this race being a big event, with a crit around the old NTK buildings. Looking on in amazement how the big guns did it. I even participated as a school laaitie in the short distance on my bmx.

My comments on this event is that is was poorly advertised, organisation was shocking. Paid R150 for 47km race, no bike marshals, traffic on the Warmbaths to Nylstroom road was terrifying, no shoulder on the road to cycle on. There was supposed to be a neutral zone from the start to out of town due to potholes and bad road surface, this was not enforced or maintained. The traffic official leading the race was not briefed about this.

Then the stuff up with the results and prize giving at the end. Under 18 kids were receiving booze as prizes...Some of the results was not even available, so much for buying another timing chip...

Pity, but I don't think I will do this race again.

Looks like the crit is back

Personal suggestions for making the event attractive:

-Race pack collection at Cycle Labs(or similar locations) in GP on pre-determined days and at the race venue before the start.

-Sensible entry cost

-Good Marshals to control the local traffic (Those Nylie Kwaggas kan be impatient, especially during the Druiwefees activities)

-Bakkie contractor to drive the route a week before and a couple of days before to fill the potholes with TARRED Surface!

-Use a larger timing company (Racetec as first option and Championchip as backup)

-Devise a safe route with the biggest road shoulders, Rider Safety should be paramount.

What I can confirm so far:

Entry will be at a big pharmacy

Online entry fee is not exorbitant, late entries will have about R40 added.

The race starts and finishes about 7km away from the "fees terrein"

New route. I believe it includes less flats and a hill. Waiting for the gpx file.

Looks like jumpertrax is the timing company

As soon as I have the gpx file, I will go drive the route. If I'm feeling particularly frisky, I might ride it

Thank you for all the feedback and suggestions, Rookie85

the 109km goes the same way, turns left at Klein Kariba, back to the R33, then right over the N1 to the turn around point then back the same way

There and back races are never a good idea.  You block both ways of traffic, and with the attitude of people in that area it might not be the best idea ever.  But that is just my view.

Good luck Shamus, it is hard work organising a race and so many twerps like me to satisfy.
