On the 9th of Jan this year I acquired a 2011 stumpy FSR comp in XL frame size. Bought mainly for the size, I set to work immediately by heading off to mikes bikes intent on sorting out a few things that would at least allow me to ride the bike comfortably.

Bought some Giant platform pedals to replace the clipless jobs, as well as some grips to replace the rather manky spesh ergo grip things. I already had a Funn fatboy 785mm riser bar to replace the 660mm bar that specialized thought would be a great match on an XL bike together with a gumpole (105mm) stem.

Unfortunately there were no shorter stems available in a budget friendly bracket, so I decided to stick with the gumpole for now. I also fitted my KS lev DX 150mm dropper seat post.

After covering a good 100kms, I noted that a few things needed attention, notably the drive train which was jumping gears when I put any significant pressure on the pedals. Almost had a nice OTB due to this.

The wheels were also really not suited to my weight or riding style and with so much flex were not exactly confidence inspiring.

First up, time to sort out a wheel set. Wheels came in the form of Dartmoor Raider rims built onto Pyga hubs. The rims that were available from my trusty wheel builder at a great price were gold, which set the tone for the colour scheme.

New wheels deserve new rubber, Onza Canis rear and an Ibex for the front.

Given that the old front wheel had a proprietary spesh 9mm through axle and the pyga hubs dont come with skewers, I had borrowed a skewer to use in the front. I replaced the borrowed skewer with a set of gold hope skewers.

The replacement stem was bought from one of the hub members. An 80mm On-One stem... gold of course. I'll give the 80mm a few weeks worth of riding before deciding if I want to go shorter or not.

The baby blue grips that I had bought on the first day of ownership were at this point starting to look very odd with the gold colour scheme coming on. They had to be replaced, this would have to be some Chromag Squarewaves in brown.... and gold of course  :)

Anyways, as it stands right now, this is what the bike looks like. Obviously the seat clamp needs to change to a gold one  :)

More to come...

Given that the gears had been slipping, I decided to just go ahead with a 1x10 conversion instead of maintaining the 3x10 setup the bike came with.

Yesterday some goodies arrived with the couriers...

11-40 10spd Sunrace cassette and Sram PC1031 chain

And a shiny new Kalbo 34T NW chain ring

As I went along installing, I was interested to see just how much weight one generally removes from the bike while converting from 3x10 to 1x10, so I weighed all the separate components before installing as well as weighing all the components I removed from the bike. I then subtracted the new components weight from the old removed components and amazingly it totaled 498gr

Some gold chain ring bolts on the scale

And finally the finished product

Very nice and congrats on the build!

I have a set of Dartmoor Raiders on my HT that I want to get (super star hubs) adapters for to go 142 thru axel so that I can use them on my Stumpy as they are a decent width and just have such a good feel. These will replace the Arch EX's on Superstar Trizoids.

Scary how much weight was dropped by going 1 x 10!

Thanks Hairy.

Yeah the 11-36 SLX cassette that was on the bike was almost 100gr heavier than the 11-40 sunrace cassette lol.

Nice project! When you're BB is shot you should get some of that Saint bling.

Any idea of costs? I'd imagine it would vary according to the amount of detail etc.

Not sure, I reckon so.

But it would most assuredly be worth it in the long term to have a very unique one-off ride that is the envy of everyone you may pass on the bike...
