Effective Doping Bans?

So with the motor doping, that young rider getting a contract cancelled, and general doping hype, surely we still have a major problem in cycling. Yes, other sports are just as dirty but when it comes to cycling, it seems the rewards still outweigh the risks

Surely, with a proven positive in either biological or technological doping, a lifetime ban should be in the legislation?

I get that people make mistakes and maybe a second chance is required, but wouldn't this go a lot further to purge the sport than a 6 to 24 month ban?

Thoughts?

Always an interesting question.

I want to support lifetime bans, but in life mistakes and accidents do happen and I can't ignore that.

Really don't know...

The same way a criminal record will bar you from ever getting certain jobs where integrity and trust is essential, I feel a doping conviction should lead to an instant life time ban from the sport, whether it is for competing, coaching, managing or whatever!

I feel the prohibited drugs list should be revamped and shortened severely to get rid of lots of the red herrings and left with only the serious drugs. If you get caught for one of those, then you get the firing squad at dawn, so to speak.

Oh, and I think the support teams for the dopers should be investigated, charged and banned too, along with the athlete. Team directors, doctors, fathers, all should pay the price if they are involved.

A lifetime ban is pretty severe considering the current ban encorporates ALL competitive sport. So that means any sportsman will not even be allowed to play a club golf competition if the letter of the law is applied. Ironically a cyclist who is banned for using something like DHEA wouldnt be allowed to enter a bodybuilding competition .... and we know how clean that sport is!!

I think the current bans are realistic considering they apply to a first offence, and also once its in the public domain, the social pressure are also pretty severe when the ban is finally lifted.

You used to get stoned to death forbstealing a loaf of bread...

IMO - yes you do make mistakes in life but sometimes its not intentional, life has alot of grey areas and thats a different story..

In Sport however, if you knowingly and willingly cheat you should get a life ban FROM ALL SPORTS. I do not want to play ping pong with a cheat. Its just a crime against other honest competitors.. Who was second in Armstrong's 7 TdF's ? From the top of your head ..quickly.. You taking away the glory from the guy who has trained for years, put in alot of hard work. He did not get to ride over that line in 1st place.

Are you being serious?? Just to answer you question "Jan Ulrich" who we all know was a doper as well.... So thtas another discussion.

What you are talking about will always be a moot point. What is the correct sentence? How do you determine unwittingly from the person who knowingly doped? There needs to be a line drawn in the sand. So a form of civil liability may be the way fwd in SA.

I am being serious yes.. So if 2nd place also doped and 3rd and 4th and 15th, is not the point... The point is by being a cheat, you STEALING away the glory from someone who has not. If that means you see way slower times, so be it. I do not watch or participate in sport to see robots or genetically engineered humans beat normal, honest people.

Maybe there is a business opportunity for some dodgy people out there.. Go start a TdF with no doping rules, no weight limits on equipment, let them re-hydrate with freakin horse steroids for all I care. There are people who will be entertained by it..

IMO its an athletes responsibilty to know 110% what is allowed and what not, like your life depends on it. I have a friend with diabetes (they know EXACTLY what they can or cannot eat) another friend cannot touch anything with gluten..

Just dont like cheats... I loved Hansie Cronje, he was one of my heros growing up.. but he got what he deserved..
