Can anyone help me with my Garmin Heart rate issue, when I start off with a ride or work out my heart rate comes through perfect but within an hour or 2 I loose heart rate or it is erratic, I have a Garmin FR410 watch.

If a new battery does not get you sorted...

Consider replacing with a R250 Polar soft strap. Clip your Garmin unit onto the Polar strap.

The Garmin strap itself is renown for giving problems.

Absolutely agree, I had the same with my HR strap, in fact I have around 7 lying around the house, I even bought the so called soft strap and that was just another disaster that chafed me. Then I read DC Rainmakers article about changing it with the Polar strap-no problems after that.

Thank you! Polar is much cheaper than Garmin.

I think I have solved my problem, I smeared a thin layer of silicone between the contact points at 15 - 20mm intervals, now the sweat can not form a "electrical short" in a hour workout perfect so far. at the back of the strap.

Thanks TNOSE... having this exact issue. There do seem to be 2 variants of the polar straps - the plain black one and the "wearlink" version. Which one have you tried?

A New Garmin strap is R850!? I'll take my chances with a R250 polar strap!

Please send a pic of what you've done. Keen to see what worked for you.

Polar strap idea sounds good like a bargain...

Also went through 3 straps until I got their "latest" soft strap with a Garmin bundle. So far so good...

had the Garmin soft strap - plain crap, just fell to pieces ( the belt with the 800 unit tho)

took the Polar soft belt and the results were not all that satisfying either after a while - i tend to not get contact immediately even thought the heart rate signal is not found ( not that issue ), then if the hrt is displayed, i loose heart rate signal often during the ride.   new batteries and having the belt as wet as possible did not help either.  Was thinking maybe this soft Polar belt is probably bust.

just switched to the old hard plastic hrt belt from cycleops and no problems

My silicon worked, with a 3:33 Carnival race I did not loose heart rate once.

One guy on some forum cut his belt between the 2 clips and that also worked, will post a pic of my solution tomorrow.

just make the pic big

Hi Dexter-morgan

I've been having the same problems. I went into Navworld. There are 4 branches around the country. I recently changed the battery thinking it was the problem. (This topic may have been shared already but you need to sync the device with the new battery and strap has to be quite tight and worn high up on your chest).  Now working.

Another point of interest the new polar soft straps don't allow for the heart rate device (plastic piece) to clip in due to small rubber boots that protrude higher than the two holes that allow the device to clip in. Before I went to Navworld, I went through to Sportsmans Warehouse to try purchase one and tried to clip in my device and it just pops off. The old Polar straps are the ones to get if your garmin strap is still giving you issues. DC Rainmaker is possibly the best site on the web for help relating to these issues.

Good luck.

Sounds like the extra weight on the strap slowed you down a bit...
