Just heard that a middle aged guy got hit by an overtaking truck. Paramedics tried to help him, but he apparently succumbed to his injuries.

My mate rode passed the accident and said the poor guy was blue in the face.

Anyone know anymore?

If true (that he passed away), then RIP fellow cyclist. Very sad to hear.

It wasn't the truck overtaking.

The deceased was overtaking another cyclist, they touched handlebars and he went down hitting the truck's wheel.

Spare a thought for the family, the woman who had to see the unfortunate event happen (or was involved) as well as the people that were helping in one way or another.

AL was tough, 2 groups broke away up Hillsnacks. with some cajolling the front 12 or so guys chasing managed to reel in the second break group. Pity thats where the chase ended. Was hard work though, the cold wind was fairly strong. Took me at least 50km to recover.

The absence of a motorbike marshall was really noticible, there were some absolute nutter taxis and cars flashing past overtaking, just crazy and scary. What happened here ASG?

The extra 5km was a workout too, especially the steep little rise to the N14 and last 1km to the finish.

Hard event, always is. good training.

RIP to the fallen rider.

Deepest condolences to the poor riders family! Absolutely terrible news!!

I agree the cars trucks etc are sometimes at fault. But us cyclists need to learn some basic cycling etiquette and be more aware of the dangers of these races that don't have full road closure.  I was going up Krugersdorp Hill, there was a lady on the far right (literally on the white line). I politely told her... passing right. Her comment back....I'm comfortable where I am and she proceeded to tell me what she thought of me and my comment. My reply...its not about your comfort, its about the other cyclists safety and trying to stay alive. I think a page should be given out with all race packs...explaining the basics of cycling etiquette and safety. Could prevent alot of injuries and fatalities. Such an amazing sport...but damn dangerous to.

I started in BL, there was a gap of about 5m between the top few in the group passing Silverstar Casino, when a silver grey car went for the gap. Had the driver misjudged the gap the two riders in front of my could have been taken out.

We were in the yellow lane, as the group had already started to spread out by this time.

There was no fault on the cyclist part, and our bike marshal was just in front, and possibly did not see anything, not that he could have done anything.

I came in 2:58 so we must have been in the same group, i think there may have been 3 groups on the road... looking at the times those 7 guys who broke away at the start drilled us by 6min

pace did seem to slow up through the craddle but man i started struggling to get over those last few rollers. great even overall and nice day out, so sad to hear about the rider knocked down by the truck

My first ride in AL and enjoyed the race. Also finished in ~2:58 so must have been in same group you were.

Those first 7 guys gave us a lesson though!

Organisation pretty good I thought, no real complaints.

Always a tough but good race.

My sincere condolences to the gent who lost his life, horrid news indeed and it shows us to take care even when we let our guard down in "safe races".

I rode VC .

Our race got shattered over Krugersdorp hill .

Thereafter was ok for me until the last 5 km when my legs saw that the distance on my Garmin was past 102 , and they just went on strike .... eish .

Struggled home the last few km but managed a 2h57 .....

I felt the organisation and marshalling for us was excellent , but we were a small bunch and kept it nice and tidy .
