26.8mm Seatpost

So last year i planned on building my SO a better bicycle. I found a chap on in the classifieds selling a Scott frame for R500. Perfect I thought, thats the brand she likes.  The plan was to rebuild my bicycle over onto her frame and then start working on a new bicycle for myself.

Everyting went perfect until the last component. The seat(post).

Turns out, the reason the seller didnt want to use this frame wasnt that he "found a better frame", but rather that he had to find a better frame because he couldn't find a seatpost for this one.

This of course he didn't divulge to me when I asked if he had a seatpost for the frame as well.

6 months later I have sorted my SO out with a bicycle, but still have this frame I can't do anything with.

Two thoughts here.

1. Don't be that guy that sells stuff here for a hidden reason. Be up front and honest about your wares.

2. Does anyone know where i can find a secondhand/cheap 26.8mm seatpost locally?  I live in the Cape so if there's a shop here, that would be awesome.

My only alternative is to grind down a 27.2mm seatpost by .4mm but I fear that's a "tad" unsafe.

Post the bike up and make it clear it needs the specific size seat post... had a frame with a similar size and found a thompson post so they can be found but rare.

P.S what frame and wheel size etc is it?

I just built up a Scott and had the same problem. Flaandria in Stellenbosch got me a 400mm no name brand 26.8 post for the low price of R170 brand new. Give them a shot. I usually deal with Cobus

If memory serves me correct..I sold you the frame (black and white, 26" medium scott aspect?)...I apologise about the seat post. I sold it two days after I bought it to fund my Teocali (posted under your enduro ride), did not know about he issues with scott seat post until I just completed a scott for my SO now two weeks ago. so there was no evil intentions in selling it to you

All good Otero.  I really thought you pulled a fast one on me.  I'll give them a shout.  I still want to use the frame for myself.

I'll go have a look at your bike as well, is it the frame you had here that day? sprayed red?

If I can't find one I'll go the ebay route.

@the nerd, its a 2005 scott aspen frame.

I still regret selling that frame..been trying to build myself a hard tail again since last year, but each time swopped or sold my frames to fund other builds..lol.

Nope, the red and black one was my Otero Bogus resprayed for me. I stripped the teocali, the raw aluminium looks super hot. Scream is you get stuck with the seat post. Can get hold of Cobus and as get him to order you one. He said they are fairly easy to source.

Spoke to Ivan at the shop, they'll get one next week and let me know. Thanks!

You might also be able to use a seatpost shim, but you'll likely need to import (which means increased costs)

25.4mm (1 inch) seatposts used to exist, and the new (2016) cannondales use 25.4 seatposts again.  Chances are you'll be able to find a 25.4 seatpost.

You can look for a 25.4 -> 26.8 shim.  It looks like a thin plastic or alu sleeve.  I've got two sleeves for my bikes (27.2 and 32.4, though.)  Used them for years without issue.

It's certainly a better idea than grinding down a bigger post.

Been searching for one of those posts in a 400mm as well. Hen's teeth are more common. Came across a supplier with a 25.something and thought I would shim it up...but then the supplier was out of stock.

Loose Cog on the retro thread was also looking for one.

If you find more than one, please tell us!
