Drop Offs

Hi Guys, I am new to MTB and I see my confidence on drop offs, high bridges with turns and fast turns is lacking ALLOT.

Where can I go to practice and build up my confidence by starting with small ones and as I get use to it, go bigger.

I stay out in the East Rand, thus prefer something in the East Rand. If not possible I can drive to a spot outside the East Rand, but still close to home.

Big Red Barn is your best bet. Not too far from East Rand. Start on green route, then blue then black diamond once you get brave. They all do-able though.

Benoni Country club also has a few drop offs that are very manageable but still require a bit of skill to negotiate properly.

Contact Peach, here on the Hub. He hosts some skills sessions up your end of the world, and he comes well recommended by fellow hubbers.

Nothing really technical there but I suppose you can go and try to scare yourself on the back section

Can't give you places to go practice but I can recommend the GMBN's YouTube channel. They have loads of how to videos and they cover some of the things you've mentioned. Having right technique will also help to build confidence. Good luck with upping your skills and confidence!

I did Peach's class on the 3rd April and can recommend it! You will get to work on some nice drop offs with some instruction. Worth a look if you want to understand how far you need to get back behind the saddle on the drop off.

Big Red Barn I have done, chicken out on about 3 obsticles: The drop off about 3/4 through the course, where you go over a bridge then down into a 360 fast turn exiting going underneath the bridge and in the far back corner als a steep drop into a fast left, right turn.

Benoni Country club I ride as well, the first red part is too hectic for me so I tend to skip it, but I think main problem there is I don't know how to approach the obstacles. Especially where you have a few humps to go over, but it is made out of rocks towards the end.

Also how would go you up the steep hill that makes a sharp turn to the right at the top?

Thanks I saw a post of training sessions, but cant remember if it was for Peach. I will contact him, thanks.

Thanks I noticed the GMBN's YouTube channel here on TheHub and I had a look at it quickly, I subscribed to them and will look at more video's at home.

Yes, I know of the BCC obstacle with the rock bridge and sharp turn. I still haven't figured that out yet either...pains me to walk it!

Alternatively go with a few "more technical" mates to BRB. As soon as you see someone do it, you believe it's doable...

Seth's bike hack videos are awesome. This isn't actually the video I was looking for to post here but its actually better in some ways. Not quite as funny though.

Okay I found it. Its worth watching.

Oh my point is for me certainly I was super confident but until I watched these I just didn't see why I needed to learn to put my back wheel down first. back wheel droppoffs changed my life.

Thanks guys, I will try to find a friend that go with me to BRB that is a advanced rider so he / she can show me how its done. I think that will be better than just watching clips. Although that is what I shall do in the meantime.

I did message Peach as well. Waiting for his reply.

Riding with riders better than you is good but videos are a start, although it only works if you can keep pace. In my case my life schedule doesn't always give me a lot of social riding time and my friends who ride (I kind of talked them into buying bikes actually, in a gentle non pushy kind of way) aren't all that interested in this technical riding business. Some of them have even been known to skip the delta downhill (the horror). The bastards always smoke me on the uphills too, no respect.

PWC MTB park has an excellent series of drop offs that allow you to learn your technique on the smaller ones first and then graduate. Big Red Barn only has one really challenging drop off and that's the cracked rib section and you either make it or you get made!
