Recent issue with Garmin Edge 500

Hi there

I've searched around a good bit but can't find recent info on this question...all suggestions welcome!

I've been using my Garmin Edge 500 for about 3.5 years with zero problems, I love it!

Yesterday I upgraded the software to 3.30 and rode this morning and saved the activity as I usually do (press the start/stop button and then hold the reset button for 3..2..1).

Garmin connect (via express or the website) isn't finding the activity file and when I manually look for it on the device in the activities folder its not there.

I've just tried again to create a new activity to be sure I didn't mistake a mistake the first time and the outcome was the same :-(

Has anyone experienced this after a software upgrade? Any suggestions?!

Thanks

Do the reset before pressing start, should fix the issue.

I believe the reset action stops the current activity and clears it ready for the next activity to begin.

Edit: Process. Start->Ride->Stop->Reset->Repeat

Sorry I should have been clearer.  @Bobbo_SA  that's the exact process that I follow.  It's worked for 100s of rides up until today with the only difference being the software upgrade.

@gerryonimo - I started using Garmin Express to enable synching of Garmin connect with Discovery/Strava.  After installing Garmin Express I plugged in the Edge 500, added it as a device and it just prompted me saying my software was out of date and to 'click here' to update it.  Did that and all happened smoothly until I tried to sync/upload my data today.  I'm on a mac BTW.  hope that helps

Garmin had problems with their website over the weekend and I'm not sure if they solved the problem yet. I could not upload my ride on Sunday.

Connect the Edge to your computer and go to your ""Computer" folder.

Open the Garmin folder and search for the activities folder.

If your ride is not there then it might be a problem on your device.

Yup, sounds to me like your having the same difficulty as me.

Upload your ride manually from Strava.

That's the problem....there isn't even an ride in the activities folder.

Google tells me I can do a master reset on the device so that might help.

Will update here if it does.

I suggest you go to Navworld and let them do it for you.

I went to them with an problem, they checked the unit and determined that it's not fixable. I walked out the shop with a brand new unit at a fraction of the cost, even though my unit was out of warranty.

I can really recommend them for awesome service

So it turns out the Master reset seems to have fixed it (for now!).  I've lost all my settings/pairings/routes etc but its not a biggie to reenter them thankfully.

Thanks for the info on navworld @hennie, good to know for the future!

@MTBeer - I don't think you have to...I'm just a sucker for clicking an upgrade button!

Thanks everyone for your help, always very impressed with the response and help on the hub!

I had this occur once before, it was completely once off and never reoccurred. I was also aggravated as it was after a huge ride, the evidence of which was lost forever.

Hopefully that's the case for me too!

I pushed extra hard this morning to get my smoothie points...oh well, good excuse to ride again tomorrow!

Maybe it was possible that your storage space on the Garmin was full. Not allowing it to save.

Doing the reset will restore factory settings which removes all the data on the device.

Thanks guys for all the advice I will certainly give it a go and report back!

@MTBeer I took my Garmin 500 in to Navworld because it froze in the start shute before the Argus a few years ago. They did the updates for me and all was working fine. However it's a bit far for me to trek out to Honeydew every time I want to update the software! I was told to update regularly to prevent these problems happening again! But being BBC ( Born Before Computers) this stuff gets a bit tricky sometimes and I just say WTF and go ride my bike!! After all that's why we buy these new techno gizmos!!

When I plug my Garmin 500 in to download, it automatically checks for any updates after the download was done.

To date I have not had a single problem with it. Been using it since April 2011.
